Jarrow MP Ellen Wilkinson leading the Jarrow Marchers into Harrogate on 12th October 1936. The gent in the bowler is the Mayor of Jarrow, Mr. J.W. Thompson.

Great Photo Peter.

Where was that taken, very familiar to me but where in Harrogate.

I think they are actually going to leave Harrogate as they look fresh and shoe spotless.

My first thought it’s Knaresborough Road more than Leeds Road but new housing could hide those houses.

I will try to find that spot and do a as now photo but don’t hold your breath. Might have go to Harrogate library for info.

Looking at the chap on the left reminds me of the trousers worn back then from family photos.

The waist band pre WW2 tended to be very high, sort of half way up the chest, no hipsters! And baggy.

The Mayor very old style. Ellen’s outfit I seem to remember my mother wearing clothes of same material.

To me it’s maybe a bit of a staged photo, no problem with that. A Photo shoot?

Why they appear to be too fresh to have walked very far. Are they actually leaving Harrogate.

The sun is off to their right which fits entering Harrogate from the North but there are no housing like those in the background unless you divert off the say the Ripon Road. Is it leaving Harrogate going South no Sun in wrong direction.

They had 2 rest days in Ripon before going to Harrogate then on to Leeds. Ripon to Harrogate 11 miles.

A bit of a puzzle to solve, that could take a while.

Just found that they got to Boroughbridge then 15.5 miles to Harrogate, so did they go to Ripon? Conflicting Routes!

If I was in Boroughbridge and going to Harrogate I would go through Knaresborough and then Harrogate..

That would fit with the housing in the photo, Knaresborough Road.

No matter what Photo someone kindly posts on this board, a certain un-named 'Expert on everything' analyizes it.
I get emails from people saying they dont post because they dont want him commenting on their posts.
A good example is Peter's photo today showing Ellen Wilkinson leading the Jarrow Marchers into Harrogate.
I have that photo in my archive & it is where Peter said it was.
