Wesleyan Chapel, Jarrow

An old postcard photo dated (posted) 16th July 1904 showing the old Wesleyan Chapel that was on St. John's Terrace, Jarrow. The chapel was built in 1870 and demolished circa 1964.

The row of houses on the left are Albert Rd. I always think that the Weslyan Chapels were beautifully designed. Why were these buildings and lots of others demolished?
We can visit old tourist attraction villages & towns all over the UK and they still have their old buildings.

If my memory serves me correctly after closure as a chapel this building became a community centre of sorts in the mid 60's and was later demolished. It included a room grandly named "The Alderman G.A. Rose Hall"
Does anyone remember that? My searches online are bringing no corroboration!

I have images of this Weslyan Chapel in my archive and it was erected 1869-70 at a cost of £4000 and made to seat 950 people. I am '99% certain' it had an upstairs balcony on 3 sides with more seating.
I dont know if it had a community centre, but it probably did have.
St Kildas Church in Wear St had a very well known 'Youth Club'

Thank You Jackie. The clipping from the Chronicle helped me.
I was wrong. It was not the Wesleyan which became a Community Centre but the old Primitive Methodist Chapel on the corner of Edgar St and Ellison St pictured here

The Primitive was on the left by the Edgar St junction (long gone). The two spires belong on the right to the Presbyterian and the left Christ Church. The Ben Lomond is in the centre background.

Ald G A Rose was my Great Uncle George. When the hall was named after him in 1953 I was just 9 so I can be forgiven, I hope, for my lapse of memory?

Always! There are a few mentions of your relative. He seems to be quite a civic minded person
