Care? don't care

Posted by Stan Wears on 4/9/2026, 9:43 am

Since my partner came home from hospital, a care package was put in place by the NHS. The carers are hard working and they are doing a great job. However, the other night it was raining hard and a young girl came at 7.30pm just as it was getting dark. She had been covering a 5 square mile area on foot. She was soaking wet so I gave her a lift to her next call. She had been working since 6am. She doesn't get travel expenses either. I kicked off with the so called care team next day who were told they need to either organise themselves or I am calling in the media for this modern day slave labour. There are lots of them like her while these companies rip off the sick and the carers...I cannot believe this goes on in modern day..

Stan you shouldn't have approached them, you contact who commissioned them either the health trust or local authority that's where the change will come from.

Your local NHS Integrated Care Board (ICB) may be a starting point Stan.
But if my experience of dealing regularly with my local one is anything to go by don't expect a speedy reply.

When my late mum was alive she had a care package which I contributed to, the Carers were put in place by Social services via Gateshead Council. The Carers mum had were wonderful ladies, in fact nearly 7 years after m6 mum passed away I am still in regular contact with the cater who remained with mum for a number of years.

Sometimes at weekends mum did have, on a couple of occasions young females, like your young lady Stan, who didn’t have a car and had to cover their ‘round’ on foot, mum always took pity on these poor girls and gave them bus fares.

I really do think that these carers should be paid more than they are currently getting they do a marvellous job under some rather terrible circumstances

Carers just been and has told me several carers have been to the management today about the slave conditions a such as distance, workload etc. They are considering a complete walk off for good. I did mention TV and the national media and it appears to have sunk in at last!
