Carr Street

An old postcard photo showing Carr Street which in its day would have been a very busy street down the quay. The photo dates from circa 1910.

Carr street was Hebburn Quay's main shopping street in the old days. That tall chimney was part of the 'C' Pit boiler house where steam was created for their winding engine that lifted and lowered the cage up & down the Shaft.
In the 1940s I remember one of the Fionda families Ice Cream Parlours was on the right before Ellison St junction.Peter Fionda ran that one.

If Carr Street was the main shopping street for the Quay and Tennant Street was the shopping street for the Newtown area, was there one that served the Colliery area? Sometimes I think it sounds like Hebburn was almost like three little sub-villages back in the day. It makes sense that people would have stayed really local for shopping with fewer cars and buses etc. on the roads.

AJG, I think you are correct. I lived in the Newtown and the only part of the Quay I knew as a child was just over the bridge to school and Argyle Street. Never ever knew where the colliery was.

Very interesting, Sheila. Confirms my suspicion. I grew up on Lambley Crescent and went to the Newtown a lot, and to Argyle Street for school, but not so much to the Quay area (I did have relatives on Prince Consort Road) and hardly at all to the area that used to be the Colliery.

I didn't know the Quay or the Newtown areas as our house was in a large field by the river. Carrahar carried out his business at the other side of the field. Our house overlooked the river and the lights of the ships passing lit up our bedrooms.we rarely put the gas lights on.
