Laziness is not always the case
I know couples who bought houses in decent neighborhoods that had decent schools for the benefit of their children. They struggled with the overhead. They also charged their credit cards to their limits to provide for their children the things they needed. When the children went out on their own they paid down their debt. It became a case of nothing to leave but their home.
