Except societal debt, it can't be inherited really.
If you die with 3 mortgages, zero cash, and 6 maxed credit cards, your children inherit no debt. The estate pays as much as it can out of the assets left, and the kids inherit nothing. They don't get to keep the house, but they don't owe anything to anyone.
