Islam was the world’s fastest-growing religion from 2010 to 2020

Muslims grew faster than any other major religious group in the decade leading up to 2020, according to new Pew Research Center estimates. Muslims continued to be the second-largest religious group in the world after Christians.

From 2010 to 2020, the number of Muslims increased by 347 million people to 2.0 billion people. Christians grew by 122 million to 2.3 billion. Buddhists are the only group in our analysis that shrank in absolute numbers, by 19 million people, to 324 million.

Our estimates covered 201 countries and territories that are home to 99.98% of the world’s population. We focused on seven groups of people: Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, adherents of all other religions, and people who do not identify with any religion.

Muslims added more people during the decade (347 million) than all non-Muslim religions combined (248 million). In fact, the growth in the Muslim population exceeded the total number of Buddhists worldwide in 2020 (324 million).

As a result of the rapid growth of the Muslim population, the gap between the global number of Muslims and Christians is shrinking. In 2010, Muslims made up 23.9% of the world’s population and Christians accounted for 30.6%. By 2020, Muslims accounted for 25.6% and Christians 28.8%. Growth in the number of Christians was slowed by high rates of disaffiliation.

As long as many Muslim societies continue to embrace fundamentalism (and the resulting misogyny, homophobia, and stubborn refusal to compromise or assimilate), then I can only hope for the religion's demise. Islam desperately needs its Enlightenment. Failing that, it is incompatible with the modern world and this will eventually lead to broad violent conflict.

with the modern world and more modern thinkers push hard for change. There will be those on-the-fringe fundamentalists too but they will be in the minority. I doubt Islam will totally die off though. If it does disappear, it won't be for a long time. Bad ideas and practices (homophobia, misogyny) seem to stubbornly persist.

Even if Islam eventually disappears, an idea can not be killed, even when it should. Look at WW II, the Nazis, etc. - the world knows the horrors of that story but we still have white supremacists and Neo-Nazis. Though not the majority of people (thankfully) I don't get how anyone can still sign on to that trash, but they do.

But then again, I don't understand a lot of what goes on these days.

A sad effect of globalism. Globalism a sad effect of digital globalism. One language one speech, universal symbols replacing actual off and on toggles and print. It’s sad for my generation. Of course the newer generation will have the necessary brain furrows for the vaunted singularity.

There's lots and lots of traditionalists out there.

Many kids are raised in the faith of their parents and enter adulthood remaining a member of that faith. Yes, the sharing of ideas and exposure to different cultures can influence a person, but many remain in their faith. Some who remain accept some of the ideas they have been exposed to and thus they and their religion morph into something different. Some, like me, leave their religion behind. That is not true for everyone though. There are those who remain steadfast in 'traditional' beliefs and practices.

Too many Muslims for Islam to be erased in our time. I suspect it will morph and change, but it will remain - kinda like Christianity. Religions are slow to change, but they do.
