How is rounding down (or up) change working for you?

I've had 3 different times in the last couple of days where I didn't get the right amount of change when I bought something. They are doing this to eliminate using pennies.

The first 2, I got shorted a couple of cents, but yesterday, instead of getting $1.59 in change, I got $1.60. It says so on the receipt.

How does this work when you pay? If someone wants $5.01, can you just hand them $5?

When I'm in the US, I very seldom use cash. Card or a payment app...

In Japan, which has a much more cash-oriented economy at the retail level, there's no "sub-currency." That is, the yen doesn't break down further (it doesn't need to: it's only worth about .62 of a cent right now). Accumulating a big, inconvenient hoard of 1-yen coins is a constant irritation. These days lot more Japanese businesses accept electronic payments (apps or IC payment cards like Suica or Pasmo, mostly...sometimes but NOT always regular credit cards), but a lot of small shops are still cash only.

Interestingly, most stuff is priced at pretty even yen amounts (that is, the price will end in one or two zeroes). The odd amounts result from tax, which is why the one yen coin is still ubiquitous..

You probably remember the saying "Farmers live poor and die rich." I am certainly no exception there. We had a lifetime of just getting by, and it gets to be a habit. Use checks for necessities and needs, but pay for wants with cash. When it is all gone for the month, it is all gone.

I wish there were bigger coins, like $20 and $100 coins, but that will never happen. It would be nice to have the jingle in your pocket actually worth something.

I think the rounding of pennies is probably a good thing, as long as it is a two way street. If they round up and down with change, then I ought to be able to round up and down when I pay. (The newer pennies corrode so easily when wet, we are ashamed to spend them) It all works out after enough time.

Some places I go to round, others still give you a penny or two. Will be glad when all places transition to rounding.

In Japan, the bills start at 1000 yen (think of it as a tenner). Coins are 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, and 500 yen. I like it that way. You end up carrying a lot of coins, but that's somehow satisfying, isn't it?

Satisfying only if they are silver.

Silver was sterling.

Copper was noble.

Clad is crap.

Wise people hoarded the good stuff before the gummint repossessed it, converted it to cash and spent it on unessential programs, wild spending augmented with huge debt.

That's why there are many beautiful St Gaudens and Morgans still around.

When I was a 10 year old and thereabout, we could use slugs in place of nickels for soda pop and candy. These slugs had no center hole if my memory serves me. Soon enough that problem was remedied. LOLS.

I’ll be more careful in future. Never wise to post personal revelations.

I use credit & debit cards which yield "cash back" rewards, like 2-5%.

I use PayPal Credit and other credit card promotions to purchase more expensive, durable goods, and get 6-24 months interest-free financing.

Debt, when managed properly, can leverage additional wealth, but you also have to know your limits and be able to cover yourself in sudden downturns ... like owning IBM stock ... which I don't. I got burned on Enron a couple of decades ago and haven't gone back into the stock market since. Real estate is the real stuff.

Never buy cryptocurrency. Someone has already taken others to the cleaners.

Beware of giant funds like Blackrock. Pick your own individual stocks.

Cash whenever possible. Large items for credit card.

Got rid of my debit card. Too many scammers breaking in. I have a three legged financial foundation. Stocks, bonds, real estate. And cash. But no guarantee the digital sleaze won’t bail us all in. There is a recent book about this. A giant sucking sound. The Great Taking.

I always pay with a credit card. I never buy anything at "cash only" places.

Recently I took all my old coins to the bank and deposited them in my savings account. Now I don't have any coins left.

Sometimes my customers give me a cash tip. I take the cash to my bank and deposit it.

JFK was the turning point in attractive coinage.

Shortly after the launch of his tribute half dollar, coins went from silver to copper-clad and became virtually worthless as collector items.

Now you can buy 100% silver coins from the US Mint for 100-300 times their face value.

I make sure I carry cash because the internet is down a lot in my area and the carb reader doesn’t work
