my main takeaway is that I'd want one of the expansion teams to be west of the Mississippi because a Nashville/Charlotte combo, for example, makes St. Louis the 'best fit' to fill out a division of Texas or mountain west type of division which would just be dumb.
A Chicago/Chicago/St. Louis/KC division would be fun. But again to make divisions work geographically, then KC would also need to be paired more to the south/west for it to make sense. In that case swap out KC for Nashville.
