Maybe things bounce back, but whether or not AI ends up hugely disrupting knowledge work in general, it already has done this for coding.
Taking a few classes or a minor to learn the fundamentals in order to more effectively supervise agentic coding tools is probably beneficial. But majoring in it expecting to get a full time coding job seems like being an apprentice wagon maker in 1905. Previous Message
I have direct experience with both of those schools really putting on airs of superiority with sons of two of my friends. Both, by the way, ended up at Illinois (one is a rising senior and the other an entering freshman). The schools are basically just telling kids, "why would I go out with YOU?" It kind of sucks.
Also, I was surprised to find out that the job market for graduating CS/CE types is pretty bad. Worse than for other engineering majors these days. Previous Message
He's interested in computer science which is saddled with the engineering department. We were placed into an auditorium and lectured on how UI is #2 or #3 in the country for that program depending on MITs standing.
They also went on to say that only about 1-2% in the room would be accepted into the program. While this may be true, it seemed very elitist.
The speaker then discussed how the kids could try to go other routes and get into other programs (LAS, etc) that have computer science programs in a hope to transfer over to engineering. Previous Message
God it’s a pain in the butt. Hopefully he’ll get into Illinois. He’s in Grainger’s middle 50% but it’s a huge crapshoot as far as I can tell.
