Previous Message I can come down on football weekends and embarrass them and myself. Honestly considering it. Congrats, btw! Previous Message Illinois had an "early option" for kids...I think the big move in days are today and tomorrow, so we were like "sure...saves us taking a day off work." Got her in there, got her stuff unpacked, and then got on the road (after hitting the bookstore, Target, and dinner). Kinda regretted taking her then because the place was pretty dead on Sunday and Sunday night, and she was like "where the hell is everybody"...but she got it sorted out by yesterday and has started meeting people and all of that. They also went on to say that only about 1-2% in the room would be accepted into the program. While this may be true, it seemed very elitist. The speaker then discussed how the kids could try to go other routes and get into other programs (LAS, etc) that have computer science programs in a hope to transfer over to engineering. Previous Message God it’s a pain in the butt. Hopefully he’ll get into Illinois. He’s in Grainger’s middle 50% but it’s a huge crapshoot as far as I can tell.

It's not just UofI. All of the elite schools in CS/CE are doing this. Ga Tech, CMU also do it.

I have direct experience with both of those schools really putting on airs of superiority with sons of two of my friends. Both, by the way, ended up at Illinois (one is a rising senior and the other an entering freshman). The schools are basically just telling kids, "why would I go out with YOU?" It kind of sucks. Also, I was surprised to find out that the job market for graduating CS/CE types is pretty bad. Worse than for other engineering majors these days.
