...people can tout all of the lagging indicators they want. If the trends continue with fewer and fewer teams having the financial resources to compete, those owners will continue to hoard cash in lieu of spending since the expense is a worthless exercise.
And... when our generation starts getting old... the next generation will care... how much? Are there kids in Pittsburgh dreaming of playing for the Pirates like there were a generation or 2 ago?
Now imagine the same thing happening in a place like St. Louis, which previously would've been unimaginable.
Over time, interest will erode, despite all the protestations that the game is healthy, revenue is great, competitive balance (because teams rise, and quickly fall, and then somebody else does the same) and all of that.
The TV situation is untenable at this point... I know Manfred envisions an NFL-like situation, but there's no way the big $ teams will go for that, so like you said, it will end up being owner vs. owner... and my guess is we will be without baseball for a while, and the ultimate deal will be unsatisfying for just about everybody.
