prior to the networked home, the amount of time spent drawing and heating water was enormous
hours and hours were spent every day drawing and heating water. when women got electricity and gas to their homes they were able to join the workforce, at least until they got married. before that they were literally carrying water all day for their mom until they married and then they were carrying water all day in their new home until their kids were old enough to do it. that freed them up to heat the water and do all the cooking and laundry. just a completely foreign concept to us. the washing machine and running hot water are miracles.
