Definitely possible. But the Rams weren’t getting a franchise QB with their 2027 1st either way.
Unless Stafford got hurt and the entire season went off the rails. So it feels like a stretch to me that the Simpson pick was made with this trade in mind. You’re trading away your future to make this deal, so it seems more logical that you’d want to use that mid 1st round pick for a player that can help you win in this 1-2 year window they’ve now set. Not necessarily tying these concepts together, but the fact it was announced on June 1 leads me to believe they were just keeping it under wraps until the time to announce... although if I was the Browns, I wouldn't want to do that... I'd want to entice better offers... but they're the Browns for a reason.
