But Singles was definitely the tipping point. It took like a year to grind their way up near top 20, then Singles came out and it was a rocket to the moon for them and any band that could appear grunge or grunge adjacent.

I heard Nevermind soon after it came out and it changed everything about what music I listened to. That said I was on a college campus, so I was exposed to it fairly early.
