Nevermind blew up when kids showed up to music stores with gift cards that grandma gave them for Christmas. Billboard had moved to SoundScan, so they had real sales data. Then the movie Singles happened, which put Pearl Jam and Soundgarden on the map. Radio stations changed formats virtually overnight. Without SoundScan, grunge and rap probably don't achieve the mainstream success they experienced at the time. Radio programming directors would have happily ignored them and kept on with the status quo.
