Never is a long time. In the current environment, it might be possible…
…to pass limitations on presidential power if the President and his party supported it. And especially if that President was actively attacking the states controlled by the other party and slashing their funding the way Trump has this term, to get the opposing party’s states to support it as well. Unfortunately, it would take really explicit constitutional amendments to get the current Supreme Court to actually uphold any limits on a Republican president’s abuses of power, and maybe not even then, given their willingness to ignore the existing Constitutional text. Previous Message ...will ever be passed again. There's no way to get 2/3rds of the states to agree on anything. Even if it were incredibly beneficial to everyone, there's no way enough people get on board. Your thoughts? Previous Message We already elected an administration to do that. That administration initiated, methodically, the legal processes required sustain an outcome like the one you're seeking. And then, before that administration could metaphorically get its boots on, agitators from BOTH SIDES began attacking them. I don't know who started "Tea Party" demonstrations in 2010, or "Let's go Brandon" in the late summer of Biden's first year, but I don't believe it was organic/grassroots. Your automatic disqualification idea might be de facto correct. The loudmouth left is already calling for Hakeem Jeffries to be removed because "he's not doing enough." They don't understand the basics of civics, but they're allowed to vote. And furthermore, you need their vote. Disgorgement is necessarily built on an I's dotted, T's crossed process, and if the American voters can't remember — for longer than 24 months at a time — who created this mess, we have simply entered a different kind of election cycle where we routinely elect one or the other political party every two to four years, and move no meaningful legislation. Similar to the one we've had for decades, but angrier, less informed and more indoctrinated. If an administration can choose to dismiss all the criminal cases that might punish a previous administration, you'll never get to the stage where civil proceedings are recouping misappropriated deeds, titles, funds. Meanwhile, Joe in Ohio doesn't want to pay property taxes, the academic left (and its students) want entitlements from meals to education to healthcare to retirement to disability pay because they're feeling blue or "neurospicy." They both expect other people to pay for these things. And the Trump base wants Mexico to pay for a wall. So you might get an intelligent, effective candidate who can explain why new policies might be cheaper in the long run. But he's married to a man, or a woman who wears a hijab. And then you've lost the Jan Crawfords before you passed any legislation. And there are enough Jan Crawfords to change the electoral outcome, or prevent your reaching 60 votes in the Senate. So the answer to your question is another question: Can Americans sustain a coalition of people willing to see the process through? What if someone promises them lower prices on everything, from Day One, in two years? Or four? Or six?
