I liked Wild. I think that review is a bit unfair in some of the categorization. Archived Message

Strayed hiked the PCT in the mid-90s. I guarantee there were way fewer women hiking alone then and I’m going to guess she was frequently propositioned by horny dudes. Also the dig that she only hiked a portion of the trail is dumb. Bill bryson hiked less than half of the AT for a walk in the woods. Most of the people who hike it skip parts, especially if they start out hoping the mountain passes will melt out and they don’t (like this summer when CA had so much snow). Very few people successfully complete the whole thing all at once. Could she have had more self discovery? Sure. Everyone does things in life for a different purpose and I think she just did it to get her mind focused on something that required concentration in the moment. I don’t think she went out to become a completely new person. I think she went out to clear her head and maybe try to not be as horrible of a person as she was. But she was also in her 20s and we are all giant turds in our 20s.
