My dad's side probably had to living in Oak Park and owning several drug/liquor stores in the area* Archived Message

Previous Message He died in his forties before I was born. I've heard a lot of stories from my dad, aunts and uncles and some from my grandmother but if they knew anything specific they wouldn't share. He married my grandmother when she was 16 and when she matured and starting getting suspicious about how he made his money, it caused an issue in their marriage. He took her to Vegas once for meetings and sent her off in the care of a couple of his goons and told them to take her shopping and get her anything she wanted. She refused to buy anything. I do know he ran a lot of gambling dens with poker machines and probably prostitution. Was involved in downstate politics and my dad remembers an election night when my granddad made a phone call to "Chicago" and basically told them how many votes he would need to carry the night. He remembers because it was apparently pretty heated and he was just getting old enough to understand that wasn't normal. Ironically, his dad was chair of the law enforcement committee for the city of Tuscola. My dad remembers going with him to "business meetings" at the Inman Hotel. He was just a kid but he thought it was weird that his dad's work took place in secret. This story isn't necessarily about his connections but I went to work for a businessman in Tuscola when I was young and he asked me if I was related to my granddad. When I replied that I was he told me a story that when he first came to Tuscola and met my granddad they had a conversation and it turned to poker. My grandad asked him if he was a poker guy and he was. Granddad invited him to a game at some place out in the boonies. When he arrived, my granddad shoved a gun in his hand and told him to watch his (my grandad's) back. Turns out he wasn't inviting him to play, he just wanted him for protection since everything was so shady. The businessman who told me the story laughed and thought it was the greatest thing ever. Previous Message A friend of my dad would occasionally call him up and ask if we wanted a new TV or VCR or Ford Ranger pickup truck. We never accepted. He was just a low level associate. My mom's best friend's dad, however, was a capo in the outfit. He took me to a bears game once and drove his cadillac (of course) up on the sidewalk next to soldier field. I said, "can we park here?" He said, "oh, i'm a friend of the mayor." 8 year old me had no concept of this. A cop came walking over, then saw him and just gave a wave and walked away. Unsurprisingly, we also had very good seats.
