Recently finished a big, sprawling Italian novel, Lies and Sorcery, by Elsa Morante. Apparently was widely considered the best Italian novelist of the postwar period, and was a favorite of and big influence on Elena Ferrante (including providing inspiration for her pen name.)
I struggle to describe the book, but it’s a work of genius. Small cast of characters and almost claustrophobic at times, with great psychological insight and acuity. But the characters are also somewhat monomaniacal which gives the whole thing a fantastical cast, despite everything being completely realist. Characters reminded me a bit of Dostoevsky.
Anyway, I think it might be something you’d dig, and definitely unique and different from the run of the mill.
And on the subject of Italian novels, I just finished a short and hilarious coming of age story, Lost on Me, by Veronica Raimo. Top notch humor with a solid emotional foundation.
