    I wonder if the unexpected level of success this year helped make his decision easier. He can leave on a high note and having proven his ability to maintain success across roster transition. Also knows he’s leaving the club in a great place for the next coach.

    But in the medium term, I’d expect them to fall back a fair bit, unless FFP really kicks in with teeth to level the playing field. It was Klopp’s management and player development far more than any brilliance on the personnel side that has allowed them to compete with City and other top clubs for trophies.

    I do not know enough about football coaching to have an informed opinion about who their next coach should be. I’d guess Xabi Alonso will be the name most talked about, but he has a pretty slender resume. But I’m not sure one of the big name coaches would be a good fit with the club, given the budget and the culture.
