It's obviously a train wreck--there doesn't appear to be anything we're doing well right now other than maybe limiting threes (and even that was disastrous against Nebraska).
The narrative initially was that losing Shannon guarding the best opposing perimeter player led to the drop off, which made sense at the time, but it's clear now with Shannon back we're not any better. And it was well before Shannon left, actually, that the defense started to slip. According to Torvik, the drop off happened in December, and January just made it worse.
From my amateur eye, it looks like we've gone all in on switching 1-5, which I'm not sure we were doing as much in the non-conference. But it's creating the same problems as last year with opposing teams switching until they get the matchup they want. We're not icing ball screens well at all, and the switching creates real problems in drop coverage. Coleman can't offer any rim protection if he's guarding perimeter players and the help rotations are almost non existent.
It doesn't seem like we should be this bad collectively with the length and size and athleticism we have. But individually, Goode isn't athletic enough to get hunted on mismatches, GaryA is a mess right now, and Harmon's effort seems to come and go. Domask is fine, but not great. I think Ty brings something, but others have questioned whether his individual effort is particularly good either. For all of Coleman's incredible instincts, he can't actually guard the 5 one on one.
When asked about defense at the pregame presser on Friday, Brad shrugged it off and talked about the importance of offense. And a lot of the lineup woes appear to be Brad consciously sacrificing defense to have the best shooters on the floor.
I don't know what you do at this point. Is it just individual effort? Or scheme? Personally, I think the switching makes players too passive and they lose the mentality of man responsibility. It's practically a matchup zone at this point.

and there is a chance we kick the poop out of them. Illinois matches up well with them
