TIL: They don’t normally do a nerve block while the patient is awake Archived Message

My daughter tore her ACL in September 2022. Before the procedure, they performed a femoral nerve block (needle pressing against the nerve to deliver numbing medication) and I literally wanted to punch the Dr watching how much pain it caused her. She’s the toughest person I know and she never cries, but she was weeping.

But I didn’t know better and just thought it was a shitty part of the process and stood there holding her hand.

She had a follow up procedure this week, cleaning up fraying of the patellar tendon (they used part of that to create the new ACL). We asked if they had to do a nerve block again, and they said yes. My daughter got upset and they said “well you’ll be asleep for it.” We said oh, thank goodness, that was the worst part last time since she was awake. They looked at us like we had two heads and said “They did what?!”

We’ve since asked around and people (like her PT and another anesthesiologist) are stunned when we tell them about it.

Now I’m pissed all over again and feel like an idiot.
