Gifted to his wife from his father-in-law but set free even before the war.
And I absolutely think family possession should count when considering that period, mainly because I'm tired of hearing not as many Confederate soldiers owned slaves as you'd expect. Well duh, but their dad did and they were absolutely going to one day.
