Better value and able to absorb the occasional miss. It’s hard to argue with the results there.
On the other hand, there’s still a need to occasionally step up and drop a big bag to land the best player. Both Van Dijk and Alison were, at the time of their signings, at the top of the prices that had ever been paid for guys at their positions. And they don’t win any of the major trophies over the past 5 years without those two.
So I think they need to keep that option open, rather than becoming too obsessed with value buys and being the smartest execs in the room. If there’s a need and the choice is a great player for $100M or just a guy for $50M, the smart choice is to spend the money.
Counter argument: buying Nunez for $80M or whatever didn’t really work out. And while they are a big market team in the grand scheme of things, they don’t seem to have the bank roll (or willingness to spend) to absorb too many misses at that price tag.

ie... they'll identify a hot commodity early (Sarr, Demin) but will have no second thought about walking once the price gets inflated.
