She usually sang in the lower part of the range and not many female ballad singers dwell there but she could switch to high notes (and back) very quickly. Add to this the emotion in her voice and very few can match her talent - in my opinion anyway.

First of all, I’m here to defend the genre of 70s ballads as a great American accomplishment. Unabashedly romantic, they still hit today.

Second of all, I KNOW you didn’t talk any shit about Karen Carpenter. I don’t know what kind of range you’re looking for, but I don’t know of any other singer who projects sadness and sweetness in equal measure like she did.

not sadness are wistfulness, which is just a form of sadness.

Even "Top of the World" which seems like it SHOULD be a happy song eventually devolves into a song about being sad that the singer's current happiness could all end.

It’s reflection on something one doesn’t have, whether it’s something in the past or something wished for. It can be hopeful or grateful or resigned. It’s complex! And it’s a great word to describe her vocal quality. It’s inviting because it expresses an emotional experience that is easy to connect to.

I guess you could say the songs all hit that vibe, but her voice is so well suited to it why wouldn’t they?
