...and, barring attending a protest, it looks like I won't be going until I'm nearly pushing 60.

As far as museums and such, there is just a shit ton to see. We spent I think 6-7 days there and could not get through it all.

African American (both very solemn but fascinating)
Lincoln monument
Mlk monument
Vietnam memorial Wall
Smithsonian zoo (might be the only chance to see pandas in the US right now)

The Wharf - outdoor food market, be sure and hit the seafood market, it's amazing.

Dacha Beer Garden - Kickass outdoor beer garden, two locations, one of them on the waterfront near the baseball and soccer stadium, very fun place to hang out.

Le Diplomate - really fun Stephen Starr French Bistro on 14th Street (awesome street to walk up and down).

They are chains, but if you've never been to Nando's or Cava, they are both incredible.

Fiola https://www.fioladc.com/ and / or Del Mar https://www.delmardc.com/ both by Fabio Trabocchi. Del Mar is maybe the only place at the Wharf worth eating at.

If you haven’t had Ben’s Chili Bowl, it’s still awesome.
Hill Country BBQ and China Chilecano, right next to Jaleo are both solid if Jaleo is packed. China Chilecano is also Jose Andres.

I like the Hirshorn and the Modern wing of the National Gallery, as well as the Library of Congress (I think you need timed tickets for that). African American History Museum is amazing.

I’d pass on the national gallery and natural history museums. They are fine, but nothing particularly special. Art institute of Chicago is a fair bit better than the national gallery. Holocaust Museum is very powerful, but obviously not a fun vacation pass time.

I haven’t tried not been to the Native American or African American museums so I can’t comment.

Freer Gallery is right on the mall—the peacock room in that is really cool, and worth 15 minutes if you are walking by. National portrait gallery was kind of cool, but not good enough to see in a limited time trip.

Portrait Museum is surprisingly cool, and manageable. Plus a really neat covered courtyard.
