Returned like 15 starters and 7 all-big ten guys from 1984. On the surface, 6-5-1 is a really disappointing year, but the schedule was insanely hard: peak national power USC and Nebraska in our non-con (0-2), plus top 10 Michigan, Iowa, and Ohio State (1-1-1).

Still finished 3rd in conference at 5-2-1

Also explains the 59-0 beatdown at Iowa the next week. Classic dead man walking game.

I was in the end zone for that game: suffering through a rainstorm too. Trust me, those garbage bag "ponchos" don't work very well at all. And if you're with a young lady... well, when she wants to leave, you do too.

Also a memory: Illini-Pitt, 1982 (had to look it up). Pitt DT just rumblin, stumblin, bumblin, down the field with an INT: one hand under the ball, other hand on top. And we couldn't do a dam thing about it. This writer says "wheezed": I'd say that was quite generous.

It was a JFL team trip and we sat in the endzone bleachers on the field. A ball rolled my way, I picked it up and threw it to the closest player....which was Dan Marino. He thanked me.
Didn't realize at the time who he was but looked him up afterwards.
That was the highlight of the game for me as it pretty much sucked after that

I think it was 1985 vs USC when SI did an entire story about Mike White and his gameweek preparation in CU.
