for the most part arena design has gotten more formulaic than football... I know Intuit Dome got some press, part of that is if you're in a large metro you can have the luxury of building a venue more specifically for basketball... but most NBA/NHL arenas are pretty standard in design, just with exterior architecture varying.

It seems like football is kinda veering towards the same thing

I kinda dig what the did to the arena formerly named Key Arena.

football, basketball, and hockey all have set dimensions, so there's not really a way to have a Fenway or Camden Yards for those leagues. It's more about stuffing as many amenities and luxury boxes around the field/court/rink as possible.

It does seem like even the exterior architecture is getting a bit same-y, at least for NFL stadiums. It would be funny if the Bears built this new place, and then the very next NFL stadium revolutionized the whole paradigm. It'd be New Comiskey Part II.

The stadium. Also concessions and bathrooms and walkways are laid out really well to make it easy to get around and get concessions. They also prioritize a family experience so there are cheap food and drink options like $2 hot dogs and $2 all you can drink sodas.

but that ideal scenario includes better/easier transportation to & from the stadium, more parking/tailgate space, and a domed stadium so we don't have to deal with cold weather. Unfortunately none of those will happen at Soldier Field

However, I usually hear fans complain about it, but not so much from players and it doesn't seem to produce an inordinate number of injuries. These are just my feelings, I do not know if it's backed up by any truth, just my general observations.

In my original post I acknowledge SF's many flaws, I'm more lamenting that the situation appears beyond salvaging despite being such a special place.

I'd feel similarly if the Cubs had pulled up their stake and moved to the suburbs as well.

Soldier Field needs some work but afaik there aren't chunks of concrete falling out so regularly that nets need to be installed.

It needs more bells and whistles (and seating) but the structure appears to be sound. Another thing that makes this so disappointing IMO.

Also highlights that love them or hate them, the Ricketts deserve credit for what they've done at Wrigley.

Very few of those people are buying tickets because of the colonnades (which, btw, you can see from outside the stadium w/o a game ticket, just fyi). They add nothing to the viewing experience of the game. And if people decide they don’t want to buy tickets at the new place because it doesn’t have colonnades there will be plenty more that will

Also I would guess a majority of the Bears’ season ticket holders live in the N and NW suburbs, so the new place will be easier and faster for them to get to than Soldier

I've heard that the fans from the NW burbs are actually the least die-hard among all the surrounding areas.

Giants owner John ... Mara also said he hoped that the stadium eventually will convert to either a grass or hybrid field.

The sticking point with grass has long been its ability to hold up under the Northeast climate and heavy usage of MetLife Stadium. Several Giants players publicly expressed their desire to change to natural grass...

In the meantime, FieldTurf Core was considered the best option at this time.

I don't think there's much doubt that the Chicago climate is worse for growing grass late in the season than that of NJ.

and why take the chance if it can be avoided? it'll likely often be too hot/humid during any daytime events. as IJKA said you probably want it be mid/upper 70s to low 80s with low humidity to leave the roof open.

I doubt they'll regret anything. events/performers aren't going to not come to the new stadium because it doesn't have a retractable roof, and fans will go where the events/performers go
