Always so fearful of the season turning into a big disappointment that I’m not appreciating the fact that the last 2 years have really been all I’ve ever asked for. Constantly playing meaningful/relevant games in prime TV slots (Big Noon, CBS 2:30, NBC Primetime) and just being part of the conversation.

Most of my life as an Illinois fan has been filled with nothing with 11AM BTN games or ESPN2 games with their bottom of the barrel announcing crews. There were so many years where I’d even just be watching the 2:30 ABC games and wishing we could even be good enough to warrant one of those spots.

I don’t know if Illinois has ever faced a stretch of QB’s/offenses like we are in the first 8 games of this season. Ryan Browne is obviously the weakest link here but he threw for 300 yards against USC and threw for 250 & scored 30 points against Notre Dame. Purdue’s offense is good. But look at this list of what we’ve started with…

Jayden Maiava
Ryan Browne
Julian Sayin
Demond Williams

Playing these 6 QB’s and offenses in the first 8 games is a level beyond anything that I can recall for any Illinois team. I loved our 2022 defense but they didn’t play a great offense the entire year, the best QB they faced all season was Aidan O’Connell. They mostly feasted on inept Big Ten offenses.

You would hope there are some things schematically that we could be doing better, but for as long as I’ve been an Illini fan we’ve quite literally never been able to hold up against teams with good QB’s and athletic WR’s that get out in space. It’s why we got blown out in every conference road game for almost 20 years. And this year we’re facing an onslaught of teams like that.

Only true fix for this is to start recruiting better, which hopefully we have started to do.

When something is happening, young people like to say it’s “lit.”

you can play good run defense from zone, especially with the 3-3-5 and 4-2-5s run today. Saban was in some version of cover 3 zone coverage almost every normal situational play at Alabama. They did run it as a match zone, so it looked a lot like man at times, but it was zone, and he says as much in all his coaching clinic stuff.

Xavier Scott would help, we'd still struggle with this collective of DBs. we defended better when we got out of the 3-3-5 and got into the 5-1 defense we normally run, we were in the 5-1 for most of the last two drives we stopped them. Henry has shown a lot more 3-3-5 this year, i'm not sure his reasoning on that.

the place where Scott was most valuable to us was as an edge blitzer IMO. Bailey's regression as a valuable box defender from the safety position has been notable. he got flat embarrassed on the long TD run by PU last week.

I’d have to back and check, but a week ago that was ~ 14 out of 18 big ten defenses.

I don’t think this group is talented, but Henry isn’t helping a lot and he’s Mr Ace Recruiter, so the talent gap is of his own making. We should hire someone better, but I don’t think Bret has the stomach for firing his mentee, so I think we’re stuck with him unless/until we truly crater defensively one of these years.

1) the B1G west is gone. these are strong offenses/QB's, but these are the types of offenses/QB's we're going to continue to play moving forward.

2) I agree that players are a big deal. my guess is henry has decided to play this way because we don't have the secondary to cover man to man. but even controlling for the bend but don't break scheme, it's still not nearly strong enough. I do think the recruiting has picked up, so hopefully that helps moving forward.

3) how "defensible" this defense is depends fully on what the expectations are. if we're hoping to be 6-8 wins every year and make a bowl, henry can probably help us achieve that. if it's 9+ and contending for that 4th B1G spot in the playoffs, I don't think he's that guy.

At best we're 4th in the B1G behind some order of tOSU, Oregon, and Indiana and that 10-63 looms really large.

With the B1G getting 4 teams last year and the SEC only 3, the committee will be looking to flip those numbers this season.
