A joint task force or “JTF” is a prerequisite for sustained combat operations in an Area of Responsibility (AOR, in this case Southern Command). At a minimum it must be a 2 star flag officer HQs. The easiest thing to do is typically plug in an Army Division or Corps HQ (they are specifically organized for this purpose). Doesn’t have to be. Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR - the current HQ in Iraq) is a 2* JTF that is ad hoc.

Strong indicator of impending combat ops.

the people who live as permanent residents for many years and don’t bother getting citizenship. Of course, my mother-in-law insisted on not becoming a US citizen until like 10 years ago. My father-in-law had gotten his fairly early. Luckily their daughters forced her into it.

Obviously, I don’t think that making that decision to stay a permanent resident should be grounds for deportation.

It’s been very clear for a long time that China is the rising power, far more dynamic, and destined to outstrip the US sooner rather than later. But that underlying economic reality has been hidden by the US’s institutional position as the legacy hegemonic power. A position that China had not cared to challenge because they had remained fairly isolationist, focused on developing internally rather than projecting power externally.

The massive strain and cost of WW1 sapped much of England’s accumulated power and wealth and laid bare their fundamental inferiority to the US. Hopefully there’s no similar paroxysm that the US will go through, but I think the comprehensive assault of Trump on all of the remaining sources of US strength and competitive advantage will probably produce a similar effect. By the time he leaves office I doubt any thinking person will be able to doubt that China is the new leading world power.

Edit: in this context, this is an interesting book to read, which analyzed the hegemonic transitions from the Dutch to the English and then the English to the US. Small sample set, but one of the key features the authors identified was the breakdown of old economic systems which triggered and then was accelerated by a massive financial crisis, which served as a harbinger of the new world economic and political order. And this was written in 1999, a decade before the global financial crisis which, I think, will ultimately be seen to have played that same role in the US-China transition.

And it’s not like the furloughed employees are out on strike or not working because of anything they did. It’s because our federal government is a dysfunctional clown car operation.

I usually view Big Brother as a simple pleasure because you can kinda watch it mindlessly...same with shows like Survivor and whatnot. Not too much intellectual commitment needed, and sometimes I need that. Sometimes you wanna watch the Bear, sometimes you need something way lighter. But for the people that get really into it and love the drama, I can see your point on shows like BB.

One of the best things I ever did for my own mental health was to get off social media. Remove the source, remove the urge to doomscroll. By that metric, not clicking on the politics thread on this board would probably be a good idea as well...lol.

Even after the first Trump term and January 6th, they seemed to assume norms and old precedent were still real constraints, so that they could completely ignore the obvious potential for massive abuse and assume if they just acted like a normal President everything would go back to the way it was in 2003. Plus, it was convenient for them to have some of those powers to take advantage of for sanctions against China and setting up industrial policy, etc. So why try to eliminate such useful authority?

The big problem going forward is it is going to take at least one and probably multiple constitutional amendments to meaningfully constrain the office. And frankly, with the currrnt Supreme Court I’m skeptical even that would matter. The single fundamental principle enshrined in the Constitution, the entire organizing principle of the government it proscribes, is the separation of powers. And Trump has pissed all over that principle and the Supremes have backed him up. So they clearly value the establishment of a Republican dictatorship above upholding the plain text of the Constitution.
