...and feels like you've left the continent.

I cannot recommend it enough for a long weekend away. I can't wait to go back.

Quebec City is a little more challenging, but feels even more European.

..and those 4 semesters of French you were required to take at Illinois come right back to you.

They are the only two cities IMO that feel like you're in a foreign country outside of North America. Montreal is a great city, I could absolutely live there. Also, they put gravy and cheese curds on their French fries.

when we were in Quebec City there was a worldclass cycling race going all day Friday and then in Montreal they were having a marathon on one of the days we were there.

I guess she figured a Texan couldn’t speak fluent French.

She was correct. But she was very interested in whether I did cowboy stuff.

In the city, including out in the neighborhoods, not at all...but we drove from Montreal to QC....

...and once you step foot out of the city proper, yeah, francophones everywhere.

All signs are in both languages, so little to no issue.

One the funnier conversations we had in Montreal was with a uber driver originally from Guinea (we rode out to the botanic gardens near the Olympic Stadium, highly recommend), who primarily spoke French but also spoke English, about how realistic the series "Shameless" was when it came to living in Chicago. Turned out he'd watched every episode, in French AND English.

Montreal, basically zero. Quebec City, you run in to some more limited English speakers*
