Guy told me the cheap option would only last two years, trying to talk me into one that will last 5 years at twice the price.

Took some interrogation, but eventually admitted that the duration is only a difference in warranty, the end result is they install the same springs.

Have had 2 garage door springs replaced in the past couple of years. Original springs on single car doors installed 18 years ago, so the springs made it ~16 & 17 years.

Installed cost was about $250.
Called in the morning and they done by lunchtime.

To me that didn't seem too expensive.

It helps that no one ever replaces (unless you're the one right now) the spring proactively.

The spring only gets replaced when it's exploded and you can't get into your garage and it's freezing.

Somehow didn't anchor the spring properly and it lacerated his jugular causing him to very much bleed out in his garage.

The springs that mount over the top of the door and you have to manually tension-no, thanks.

The springs that mount to the back support of the door track and the pulley and are stretched by the cable moving? No problem.

Found a video. Ordered a kit with the bars to "rewind" the spring. Followed the directions and got up on a ladder and put the thing back on. Did it without incident. Garage door is still working fine today.

The amount of people that have told me how amazingly stupid I was since then has been, well, a lot. I guess I hadn't heard it was dangerous. That was just me in my "YouTube can show me how to fix anything" phase, and I wanted to save some money.

but the risk of what could happen if you screw up or if the spring breaks while you're adjusting/setting it is very high.

A drain line or something plug and play like replacing a faucet, sure. But I’m getting a professional for any real water lines that have pressure.

If it's in a place you can't see, that adds an element of worry that might be worth paying an extra $300 to avoid.

But you can also perch a WiFi security camera near the junction and look at it for a month or so.

PEX is a little different, but using PVC or CPVC works if you don't keep your hot water at scalding temperature.
