Everyone is worried about the salary cap and defense for next year, but we are already paying a lot of money to guys who aren’t out there. Even though it remains to see how good they are, dayo and shemar should be healthy by next season. Our weird backup linebacker and corner have won weekly awards. Everyone is mad how aggressive and tough our 5th round edge tackles people.

We have some good shit going on.

1. On the spike before the last play, Walker (#20) moved just before the snap. This should have been a motion penalty that would have resulted in a 10-second runoff and ended the game. (11:40 of the video)

2. Duverney is 100% scoring a TD if Caleb could have gotten the ball to him at the 40 second mark. Similar to the last play of the game, Caleb faced significant pressure and was backpeddling, so I can't blame Caleb. And give credit to the 49ers for getting pressure with 6 rushers. Holy hell Duverney was so open though. Would have been interesting if the 49ers had gotten the ball with 30-35 seconds left.

(that All-22 is a great watch. Caleb had an incredible game.)*

Weird playoff anomaly for the Bears

My first vivid memory of watching a Bears playoff game was the Steve Walsh team winning at Minnesota in the 1994 season and then getting destroyed in SF.

In the 30 seasons since, the Bears haven’t played a single true road game in the playoffs. Only game they played at an opponent’s home field was the empty arena game against New Orleans during the fake COVID season.

They’ll have played 8 home games during that time frame after the upcoming first round game.

When something is happening, young people like to say it’s “lit.”

Also, ignoring the 2 Super Bowls, 15 of the last 19 Bears playoff games have been at Soldier Field

going back to 1985.

Middle linebacker Tatum Bethune received the call from defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.

It all came down to the final play, a second down from the 49ers’ 2-yard line with :04 remaining in the game.

The 49ers were clinging to a 42-38 lead against the Chicago Bears, a team that already had won an NFL-record six games this season when trailing with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.

Saleh decided to send Bethune and weakside linebacker Dee Winters on a blitz while defensive linemen Sam Okuayinonu and Yetur Gross-Matos dropped into coverage.

But Bethune and Winters had a different idea of how to defend Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams.

Bethune explained what happened while speaking with Tim Ryan and Guy Haberman on the KNBR 680 postgame show following the 49ers' sixth consecutive victory.

“Me and Dee were supposed to be on a blitz," Bethune said, "and we dropped out because we knew what they were capable of and we just wanted to put some extra heads in the throwing lane and make Caleb run around and waste the time out, and that’s what he did."

Caleb looked legit, despite what Cris Collinsworth says, and he still left meat on the bone. He's improving, gang, and his upside is a top 5 QB in the league- AND I actually trust the guy in charge to develop him. I don't think I have ever been able to say that about a Bears QB or about his coach.

The defense is still atrocious and needs to be the primary, secondary, and tertiary focus of the offseason.

Just get me one playoff win. Please.

There’s not a ton of available money. The Dayo and Jarrett contracts are rough (21 and 22 mil ideas cap respectively), so they are in the roster next year. The only guys on defense cuttable for true savings are Edmund’s and Sweat, and they might defeat the purpose. We also need to resign Bayard and brisker.

I’d cut Edmunds and Swift, Swift has been much better than last year but you need the cap space to fix the DL and can find RBs cheaply. Edmunds gets you $15MM in cap space. I know people have a soft spot for him, but I just don’t see how you can keep a guy like Cole Kmet on the books when you can save $8.4MM cutting him. For now, I’m assuming Sweat only saves the $8MM and for that you may as well keep him.

That gets you to like $32MM in cap space? Maybe $25MM taking the rookie pool out? And you’ll need a solid chunk of that to fill the roster, so gonna have to restructure some deals… but all the guys you’d restructure stink outside of JJ, which isn’t ideal.

TL:DR- Yeah, not a lot of assets to remake the defense!

There’s always the people that say that the salary cap in the NFL can be manipulated if you’re willing to do so, they have to figure something out. Poles tried to fix it all this offseason even though there wasn’t anything worth spending that money on, and that might backfire. But maybe something creative can be done.

$40M cap hit for Dayo and Jarrett is just a killer. Plus $13M for a guy who is never gonna stay on the field (Gordon).

Kyler-man has been pretty healthy outside of this season. Hopefully he can get back on track.

They need to draft defense for the future, but it’s incredibly rare for an edge rusher to be super productive in year 1 - especially when not drafting until late 1st round. So if we’re talking about fixing the defense for next year specifically, there would almost certainly need to be a big fish brought in via trade.

just losing Benedet, Duvernay, OZ, Smythe, and Braxton, I think. And I don't think we really have any cap cuts. Can't cut DJ yet, even post June 1 saves us basically nothing. Cutting Kmet saves us a decent chunk but we (and the league) are going multi-TE so frequently I think he's worth it.

This was more than I could have ever hoped for. And until about 4 weeks ago, there was still that lingering doubt that the point of this season wasn’t necessarily about just the wins and losses and that the record was shielding the fact that Caleb was still struggling. The #1 priority for this season was reaching the end of it and being able to confidently believe that Caleb is a legit dude.

And starting from the second half of the Green Bay game, he’s now taken the leap we needed to see and there’s no reason to be anything but thrilled.

This is right after he stepped out of the tackle attempt of the free rusher. He then drifted towards the sideline which is where the mass of humanity in the end zone was gathered, but what if he instead stepped up in the pocket and started getting some action going towards the right side of the field. Might have been a better opportunity for a receiver to break free with more room to work with.

With 6 seconds instead of 4, you can get 2 plays in. Split Loveland out wide and have him run a slant or fade and just throw the ball immediately.

Instead he gets tackled, ball rolls around a bit and they lose a few seconds.

It’s not to the Aikman level, but it’s another example of Caleb being held to a different standard than the much more veteran/respected QB who is playing in the very same game.

There’s 1 or 2 of those misses that Caleb could have made the throw on, sure. But no other QB is expected to throw downfield while running sideways and backwards away from rushers quite like Caleb is. I have widely criticized his inaccuracy earlier this season, but the throws he missed tonight were nothing like the ones he was missing before.

And in the two times the Bears got a stop, it was because Purdy bounced a throw in front of his intended WR because he was backpedaling with pressure in his face. Because those aren’t easy throws!! But no one says a word when the other guy does it.
