name Matt Ammodio. He won 38 consecutive games, the third longest streak in history. He had a very specific way of answering questions, where he would say "what's' instead of "what is" and he would almost always answer with a last name only. He popularized this strategy, the logic being that it reduces your chance of error of saying the wrong first name, since it's not required. So yeah, it's very much a thing now.

Specifically going for the $1000s immediately, then hunting for the daily double, then betting it all.

He’d often be up 10k on people before they’d had a chance to even settle their nerves. Game was already over.

It was like a jeopardy blitzkrieg.

I have a friend who is really into trivia and was a one time Jeopardy winner when he was 19, and an A Rundle Learned League player. He says that Victoria Groce is the best trivia player in the US right now (excluding Jennings). I also think that Yogesh Raut is very good, as much as I can't stand his abrasive style.

Is it a recent meta not to include a first name when the answer is a person? Pretty much every one so far has been surname only.

I wouldn't say they take advantage of it WAY more

I'd guess they used to do it 75-80% of the time and now they do it 95-100%.

So yeah, it's more common, but not by a huge amount
