…and they had a Home Run Inn so I grabbed a personal pizza for lunch. It was not good. Reminded me of Godfather’s. Just kind of bland, especially the crust which was chewy and tasteless.

Maybe it’s a lot better at a regular location, but I was pretty disappointed.

On a couple of occasions, I've had Lou Malnati's that was shipped to SoCal. I phrase it that way because it wasn't my choice. People send it as gifts. And of course, these are people who were born in the 50s and fondly remember the heyday of Chicago deep dish.

But the Malnati pizza is not so special that it's worth the $100 you'll spend. And then you have a huge Styrofoam container to worry about.

The Los Angeles area Aldi stores carried both Gino's East and Home Run Inn at the time, and I got one of each for comparison. I thought the latter was the best of the three. (I think it's exclusively at Vons now, but I don't go to Vons very often.)

The consensus about the Gino's East frozen deep dish: it's not quite the same as the real thing. (There's one in Sherman Oaks, and people have different opinions about whether it's the real thing.)

Because Giordano's is the meh-est of the deep dishes, I can't imagine it being worth the hassle and expense.

...SoCal has some great options for Chicago thin and deep dish/stuffed.

Too many to list but my #1s:

Thin - Biagio's in Lake Forest. In fact, I am enjoying a pizza there now. 50 years and they do it right. Shame I just discovered them 5 years ago.

Deep Dish/Stuffed - Tony's Little Italy in Placentia. Another long time place. Tony Sr passed, but the family still does a superb job and it's a twice a year treat.

We had the end of year Marching Illini banquet there one year, probably 1980 or 1981. A somewhat hidden location, but as good as it is/was, stuffed pizza is a special occasion pizza, and Pizza World, Domino's (when they arrived), Papa Dels, and Willie's dominated.
