the OF is an abomination and I wouldn't be surprised if Colson takes a step back. Not saying he's not gonna be good, but an he adjust this summer?

Worried about SP too but hopefully Shultz and Hagen can at least hit the rotation by July

This will potentially be an all-time terrible outfield

there are some pieces there, but still so many holes all over the place. this team won't sniff being decent until post-strike.

I was afraid that with the money tied up in Imanaga they’d pay out the rest to Gallen and that would be their big moves.

But now with the addition of Cabrera, who has upside, and Bregman I feel much more comfortable adding Gallen.

I think it’s clear the Cubs will jump at least the first threshold of the CBT. I speculated this from how aggressively they were adding bullpen arms. Seemed like the tell.

They need more pitching and right now there aren’t great options unless they can swing a trade. Valdez is out there but I really am not a fan of adding him. Suarez and Cease were my top two and while it seems they were interested in Cease and Imai to the end it’s a bit odd to me they kind of had no interest in Suarez.

Anyways Gallen feels like the most realistic option right now. And breaking it down it seems like the last couple months he was actually decent while changing his pitch mix so maybe there is something to work with there.

I know Steele is an unknown in terms of when he’ll be ready and how good he’ll be, but…

what’s the argument for them needing more starting pitching? Maybe the guys they have aren’t all as good as we’d want, but they have 9 guys who have made lots of starts over the last 2 seasons. I can’t imagine they would think that spending more money on starting pitching is how they’d want to use whatever limited resources they have left.

That's not a critique of those players or the Cubs in general. Just how it goes.

That articulates why they would want to spend more on pitching.

I think it would be their clear priority to finish their offseason if they can and it's the place they can make the biggest improvement to their roster. I'd be surprised if they weren't actively looking to add what resources they have left to their pitching staff.

Top priority is another starter with a possible bench OF bat as well. Though they do have McCormick and Carlson to compete with Alcantara.

And there is a lack of elite starting pitching though I don't think Gallen would fix that but maybe.

Steele as you mention is obviously coming back from injury and we have no idea when and how good he will be when he is back.

Matthew Boyd threw the most innings of his career last year and he pretty clearly felt it down the stretch of the season where he was maybe the worst pitcher the Cubs had until he shoved in his second start vs. the Brewers.

Shota was terrible last year especially down the stretch. So much so they wouldn't let him start Game 5 vs. Milwaukee.

Cade was very good, but also threw the most innings of his career and was probably somewhat lucky. I expect some regression.

Cabrera has elite upside and is trending in the right direction, but also has had major control and injury history in his career. He was shut down with elbow injury towards the end of last year.

Taillon has mostly been solid but he's had his valleys. He was pretty good when he learned the kick change and incorporated it to the end of last season but not the guy I want to rely on.

Colin Rea likewise was pretty good at the end of last season but also he's Colin Rea.

Javier Assad is not good. They can maybe rely on him to spot start and I prefer him coming out of the bullpen. There was a reason he didn't make the playoff roster wasn't on the team at the end of the year.

Jordan Wicks is a guy I actually have hope for but he still hasn't really done it yet on a major league level and he's been hurt.

Ben Brown when he gets hit is absolutely terrible. Worst in major league baseball. I think he has a lot of potential and can be a pretty good pitcher but the exit velo is a serious problem that limits him pitching in the majors in any role. He needs to figure that out.

They have a lot of depth and I expect them to have a lot of options but they can use even more. They need more. It's not a surprise that they are still lurking around looking to add more.

Every team could use more pitching. The Cubs have a great position player group but they don't really have the pitching staff to contend with the elite teams unless they get a few breakouts. Adding more will give them option and more of an opportunity to find the right guys.

Haven’t read the Mooney article but I definitely get all those points.

Just saying that for a team that has in recent history had a pretty firm ceiling on what they’re allowed to spend, I’d be surprised if they could make a case to Ricketts that they need some extra from the piggy bank to sign a guy that had a 5.00+ ERA as their 10th starting pitching option.

I’m all for it if the money is there though.

And he’s the most realistic option.

They are currently at $243 million with the CBT threshold at $244 million. They are going over the threshold regardless so if the opportunity is there to add something that could be impactful they should.

For the right deal I’m in on Gallen though if they could find something better I’d be for that too.

Right now fangraphs depth charts which is currently based on steamer has the Cubs projected as the 7th best position player group and the 19th best pitching group and as a subset the 20th best starters.

They could use another impactful starter. Gallen over the last two months was pretty good maybe it’s him. I expect them to be involved with him but if someone is more committed to him they’ll let him go.
