I think the #1 seed is likely dead, so the focus for me now would be in fending off any of the potentially rising 3 seeds + trying to stay/get ahead of Purdue. Florida is the one we want to lose the most, I’ve also included Gonzaga even though I think they are unlikely to get up to 2.

So the big outcomes for us this week would be these…

Kansas losing at home to Houston tonight
Florida losing at Texas on Wed (by far the most important game for us)
Purdue losing at home to MSU on Thu
Kansas losing at Arizona on Sat
Nebraska losing at USC on Sat
Florida losing at home to Arkansas on Sat
Gonzaga losing at St. Mary’s on Sat
Purdue losing at Ohio St. on Sun

Izzo says he did not think Fears did anything on purpose and calls it "a reaction" with the kick. "I thought Jeremy Fears played his ass off 99% of that game." Chewed him out for it, saw it on tape and says Cadeau pushed him in the back. "I'm sick of it being one-sided."

Based on the NCAA site, that would drop Miami from 2.55 (#30) to 1.55 (#39). Still on the right side of the bubble.

Also, that means a bubble team would have 2.5 losses with Miami's schedule. By comparison, a bubble team would have 13.66 losses with our schedule.

ASU or OSU are projected. Then they'd get Kansas in the quarterfinals.

Seems like our ideal scenario is ISU loses one of the first two, or at least drops the game to Kansas.

Then we want Nebraska to lose to Iowa this weekend or at least not make the BTT title game.

I think we get those results and beat Maryland and a 2 feels likely. Win our quarterfinal game too and it feels hard to bump us.

I don't think we need any of those things.

Barring a disaster at Maryland (and even that might not push us past this), feels like we are pretty locked into the 7 to 10 range now.

Beat Purdue next Friday and it’s probably just a judgment call for the committee between us and Iowa State for the last 2 seed, and I’d feel pretty good about where we stand there unless ISU gets a couple big time wins in their tourney.

Also can now root for the outside chance of Iowa winning at Nebraska and pushing us to the BTT 3 seed.

Michigan State beating Indiana has moved them up SIX spots since yesterday, up from #13 to #7.

But honestly, the matrix has been pretty accurate for quite some time. I don't think there is any need to overthink it beyond that.

I'm also convinced that most bracket projections this time of year are just moving teams up and down after wins and losses like a poll, rather than really evaluation resumes for each projection. That starts to change heading into the conference tourneys as everyone takes a step back and really looks at the big picture.

which of these 3 things the committee decides to prioritize more than others.

1) NET/KenPom (good for us)
2) Overall resume - number of Q1 wins, bad losses, overall record (ok for us)
3) WAB - (bad for us, at least as of now)

Thank goodness we’re doing all this to figure out where a 2 or 3 seed and not the old days of seeing if we’re on the right side of the bubble or not.

Belmont, Bradley, ISU, Murray are the 1-4 seeds and there's not a whole lot of difference between the four. UIC and Valpo have beaten and looked good against decent teams.

I doubt Belmont will travel well but Bradley and Murray will bring a lot of fans and ISU might if they play Bradley in the semis.

Bradley has overperformed expectations again - not sure why Wardle hasn't been offered a higher level job.

We have massive blowouts against Northwestern, USC, and Indiana in February.

And then we have 3 OT losses, one on the road to a top 10 team where we played really well, all of which would have been good to great wins if one free throw, one bounce, one call, one box out, one lane violation, one last second coaching brain fart went differently.

The Michigan game was trash, no way to sugarcoat that. But outside of that, this is so incredibly close to being a fantastic month. Which is what makes it sting a lot worse. Every win we have this season was clearly deserved but we’ve managed to lose every final possession tossup game, which is really hard to do.

When something is happening, young people like to say it’s “lit.”

Fair... but... we blew a 9 point lead at MSU... a 12 point lead to UW... a 23 point lead at UCLA...

...I suppose those can be taken however one would like... good enough to get up that fair, or bad enough to lose the leads... but it is annoying nonetheless.

I guess my bigger feeling is the 2 best teams we faced this year, we looked largely helpless against both.

It’s especially crazy to think that we won that game without Tomi and without either Keaton or Mirk being what they are now.

Also weird to look at the box score showing Jake Davis played 15 minutes and didn’t take a single shot. Just a totally different team than the one we are now, which is also why tournament resumes can be so hard to evaluate.

So yeah, it kinda hinges on him and mirk playing well. It doesn’t mean he’s better or more important than Keaton. You know you’re going to get good play and good decisions from Keaton. But those good decisions from Keaton wind up in tomi’s hands a lot.

And the rebounding speaks for itself. We must dominate the boards to be at our best. And if our center isn’t doing it, we lose one of our edges.

Yes it's better than RPI and seems like a great tool for figuring out which teams have done enough to get in the dance. But using it for seeding seems not quite as good. Will be interesting to see how it tracks there this time.

Haven't really looked at it very far, but hopefully this is a "reward" for SOS?

“The biggest bracketology story from the past week — outside of the games, of course — was the NCAA Tournament selection committee’s reveal of the top 16 seeds last Saturday. That reveal and the ensuing interview with selection committee chair Keith Gill garnered many headlines, attempting to parse Gill’s words to find clues about the committee’s overall approach. While Gill did offer some hints, the bigger hint for bubble purposes came from a different NCAA source.

Last week in Indianapolis, the NCAA staged a mock selection committee exercise attended by many members of the college basketball media. A variety of personalities were present, and the most crucial takeaway was NCAA vice president of men’s basketball Dan Gavitt’s pointed mention of the importance of Wins Above Bubble for selecting NCAA Tournament teams.

Wins Above Bubble, or WAB, is a new metric added to the NCAA’s team sheets ahead of last year’s tournament. It attempts to measure how much better or worse a specific team did against its own schedule than what would be expected of a generic bubble-caliber team. In other words: How many wins did you amass, and how many more or less is that than a bubble team would have?

That approach has multiple benefits. Most importantly, it provides one number to directly compare teams with drastically different strengths of schedule.

For a real-world example: Using the NET rankings to measure opponent quality, a bubble team would be expected to have won 14.09 games so far against Auburn’s wildly difficult schedule. Auburn currently has 15 wins, which puts the Tigers at +0.91 WAB. That same generic bubble team would be expected to accumulate 25.87 wins against Miami (Ohio)’s schedule. The Redhawks are 28-0, so they are at +2.13 WAB. That’s a one-to-one comparison to show that Miami has accomplished more than Auburn, despite a galactic gulf in schedule strength.

Furthermore, WAB makes every game matter. Rather than a microscopic focus on Quadrant 1 wins and Quadrant 3 losses, this all-encompassing metric captures the results of every single game on a team’s schedule. That nuance prevents arbitrary cutoffs — like the difference between a home win over No. 30 in the NET (Q1) or No. 31 (Q2) — from skewing our perception.

Flaws remain. WAB does not adjust for injuries/player absences, and it is only as strong as the tool being used to value the teams: the NET itself. But its ability to equalize across all levels of teams makes it as fair a tool as any.

Because of WAB’s stated importance to the selection process, we have added where each team ranks in the metric to our bubble breakdowns below. Hopefully, this helps visualize what the selection committee will be looking at over the next couple of weeks.“

I don't really have any issues with Purdue quite frankly. But Braden Smith has been an absolute GODSEND for that program. Can't imagine when he rolled onto campus there 4 years ago that he would leave as one of the ALL TIME GREAT PG's in B1G conference history. He's the least of their problems right now. They need to look at their other 2 Seniors who've simply fallen short this year.

So if he's getting the bulk of complaints, then their fanbase can take all the seats.

Would take some majorly unexpected results to shift that, getting to the 3 or 2 required Purdue staying tied with us (since that would help with the tiebreaker) or MSU losing today.

At least we now avoid a zero upside/all downside 5/12 game as long as we don’t screw up this week, and can probably control our own destiny with Purdue as it relatives to head to head seeding with them - since we’ll be matching up in the 4/5 game.

As far as the big tournament 2 seed path, I have to I have to imagine that MSU is now in play to catch us as well though, not likely to happen but they’d almost certainly pass us if they win in Ann Arbor next weekend.

The teams on the 2 line other than Florida have all been fading enough that the hotter teams on the 3/4 line are starting to be a threat (MSU, Nebraska, Texas Tech). Obviously a lot can happen in the next two weeks, but it still kind of feels like we’re going to find that we just needed to get 1 of the 4 coin flip games (Nebraska, MSU, Wisconsin, UCLA) and losing all 4 is going to allow some team to jump us for that last 2 seed.

but important to remember that’s not what the committee will do at all. November counts just as much as February. Folks like Lunardi treating the s-curve line a poll and moving teams up or down a line with every single win/loss is beyond asinine, and we should avoid falling into that trap.

The resumes are impossibly close, but everything in our resume relative to the other teams still favors us on the 2 line, except our WAB.

Still a lot of basketball left.

Houston blowing out Colorado at home apparently warrants moving them from 9 to 7.

I won’t argue at all with Houston being ahead of us and suspect they probably are in reality, but I can’t envision any scenario where a Quad 3 home win moves someone over not one but two different idle teams that you had as a 2 seed yesterday. Whatever his process is just seems completely disconnected from reality.

Didn’t get everything we wanted today (Florida, Nebraska) but all in all a pretty solid day of results for us. Biggest one is tomorrow, don’t have my hopes up but an Ohio State win at home against Purdue would do wonders for us.

Then could really use UCLA taking down Nebraska on Tuesday just to create more distance between us and them prior to BTT - just in case they make a run on the non-Michigan side of the bracket.

Could be a world where we realize in hindsight that we didn’t want Texas Tech to win today. I think/hope we should still be clear of them by a decent margin but we probably shouldn’t be. Their resume is far better than their metrics and I wouldn’t be surprised if they get a better seed than expected now that they can point to this game as a sign that they are still really good even without Toppin.

Tarleton State is expected to formally announce Friday morning that men's basketball coach Billy Gillispie will not return next year, sources told ESPN. The school is expected to run a full national search for a new head coach.

Gillispie has been sidelined since Jan. 15 due to health issues, also missing a game in December. He told The Dallas Morning News earlier this month that it was related to blood pressure and his heart.

even with that being said, those guys being their best players just gets them back to being that annoying 5-8 seed team every year. Their Edey-Braden run of having 1st team All-American talent that sticks around forever is hopefully over.

Cluff just gets in TKR's way. Neither's good defensively, but Cluff stresses the whole defense so much that it makes TKR look worse defensively.

TKRs good games, by and large, have been when Cluff sat.

Should have gotten a more atheltic 4 instead of Cluff. Still problems with the team, but it would have been a better fit.

and UConn unexpectedly losing that home game to a .500 Creighton team, the 4th #1 seed actually was in play if we had won that game on Saturday. Still would have required a bit of help from UConn and Iowa State, but there’s a good chance we’re currently sitting at #5 on the S-curve right now had we gotten that one.
