Last week, my family home of 60 years in DG, IL was listed for sale. This week my home of 36 years in RSM, CA will be listed for sale.

Crazy time, and a lot of emotions with the 2 homes, but it will be nice when they sell so we can pay down the new house in Laguna Hills.

So will I need to change my name here? I could get away with RSMBob being Real Sexy Man or Romantic Single Male (no I couldn't!) but what would LHBob be? Maybe Left-Handed Bob!

and his mobility is getting worse. they really need a ranch with no/minimal steps

BUT...what do they choose to do? add a 3 car garage that is nearly the same size as the house which they will never get the amount of money back they are putting into

I'm 73. My husband is 74. Owning & maintaining a house was exhausting.

Staying in our totally paid off three bedroom ranch cost more than you would think. Property taxes are high, utilities are high, insurance is high. There were constant repairs to deal with and many new expenses like mowing, fall clean up and snow removal because we physically couldn't handle those jobs anymore.

Our oldest daughter has been working at Ohio State for the last five years (after 7 years at The Beloved) and she encouraged us to consider a move to the Columbus area. We'd do some babysitting and she would haul us around and look out for us when we're really old and feeble (but hopefully not demented.) We're keeping up our end of the bargain and it remains to be seen if she fulfills her part.

In the end, we decided to be renters. We leased a 2 bedroom apartment in a 55+ active living building nearly two years ago. We starting living there full time in December, 2024. There were many trips back to Illinois to get our house ready for sale. We donated stuff, we tossed stuff and we put free stuff on the curb. I found homes for all of the good family keepsakes. The house was listed right around Labor Day last year and it sold quickly.

I have never been happier. Our lives are so simple. Groceries are delivered directly to our kitchen. Our monthly utility bills are always under $100. Renter's insurance is super cheap. And I have the sewing room of my dreams. The biggest downside is that there are crazy Buckeye people everywhere. Our grandson learned to spell O-H-I-O before he learned to spell his name. Sigh.

The important thing is that this was OUR decision. I don't envy you youngsters who might have to force your oldsters to leave their home. Remember the family home is just a building. They will take the memories with them.

I get it. Just stayed at my parents' house Sunday night for the first time in 9+ months.

2 story with all 3 bedrooms upstairs and they are both 80 y/o. Fortunately, no mobility issues...yet.

House is so full of stuff I have no idea how they'll ever be able to sell it / move. Gonna take a lot of dumpsters.

I feel like the market is still strong in Peoria adjacent. Not much stays on the market here long. Builder in this subdivision just closed on 2 new spec builds at 575k last week.

Good luck, man. We’ve bought and sold 5 homes over the past 3 decades. Have been lucky to always

come out ahead financially - usually a little and one time a lot (cashed out of a home we liked OK but certainly didn’t love during the pandemic price escalations).

It’s always a bit nerve wracking financially and emotionally - having moved on from homes several times, there’s always emotions that crop up that you never expect in addition to the ones you do expect.

We are currently renting until we find what will hopefully finally be our true “forever” home as much as that can ever exist. Best of luck to you as you navigate the stress and anxiety ahead.

time but we weren't ready to pull the trigger. Now, nothing there as of yet.
Still going through the process of selling my house though and probably rent down here in Peoria/Washington until something opens up in Rockford area.

This is the first time we have rented since residency. Feels weird and moving twice will suck. But

just seemed like the right move this time since we don’t need to worry about schools for kids, we want to be pretty picky, and home values here are predicted to fall in the next 6-12 months.
