mini currently is an additional cardmember on my Apple Card but doesn't have his own card. Did your kids get a card of their own when they went to college? Do they have kiosks with stupid giveaways like they used to in the 1990s?

so I found out yesterday that Mrs. ATL was carrying a $500 positive Apple Cash balance for years I'm sure, most importantly earning zero interest. Moved that to the cash management account so at least we'll get ~3%.

I'll have to get ahold of mini's phone to see what his balance is.

Credit scores are based on length of credit history and total available credit balance. The longer the credit history and larger available balance, the better. Just stay on top of them to pay that stuff off. Only use a card if they have that money on hand or will have on hand in 2-3 weeks.

Now when I log in to Amex's website for my own card, it says I'm a member since 1989. And my credit history says I go back to 1989, which has always helped my credit score... the longetivity.

She finished undergrad in 3 years, got a scholarship that is paying for 8 semesters of college tuition (so first year of grad school), moved home to save living expenses during grad school, and pays her own other expenses (gas, clothes, etc.)

She has enough saved that she could pay off the car outright. Just wants to keep her savings account high. I've not made a single payment on the vehicle. Edit: She bought the car so she would have something reliable for commuting to grad school. Also helped me out so I could pass down mrs. card in college” thing too. But it did help tremendously with building their credit history / score which enabled them to have less issues when doing things that look at credit score like applying to rent an apartment.

We set clear ground rules about what it could and couldn’t be used for and how much each month. Any questionable charge was discussed which led to great learning opportunities. I got a few extra points and they also had the card available for true emergencies or for them to purchase pre-approved exceptions like plane tickets to fly home for breaks.

For the last couple of years we switched over from using the cc to providing a set monthly deposit to their checking account to cover rent and groceries that they paid with their debit card / ACH to help them learn even better budgeting and management of basic “adult” expenses.

Overall that approach adapting over the years worked well for us.

necessary in most places in the US.

I think an 18 year old getting a credit card with a low limit is fine and probably something that would be helpful to help them learn about money management. I think my first card that I applied for on the Quad was a $500 limit or something. Hard to do real harm and useful in a pinch. They'll need a credit history as the progress into adulthood and look for a car loan and ultimately a mortgage.

Might be different with Mini since he’s been an authorized user on ATL’s card already. Before adding our eldest as an authorized user on my card she applied for a few “student” cards and didn’t have enough income + credit history to get approved for anything except a Discover card.

it was for emergencies but my parents would also tell me to buy something with it for birthdays or whatever and they would pay the bill. That way I could start building some sort of credit responsibly.
