As expected, the Bowen Byram contract is a nasty one. $12.5M per year which, for now, makes him the highest defenseman in the entire NHL.

Positive is it’s only 6 years, I was worried it would be an 8 year deal that could become a real albatross.

Feels like this guy will likely be what determines Kyle Davidson’s future as a GM.

First we have this new injury that could cost him a lot of time but even if it doesn’t, there are increasingly real concerns about his durability after somehow fucking up both shoulders on injuries caused by extremely minimal contact.

But now there’s the issue that Davidson didn’t manage to get his deal done before he became restricted free agent. The gentleman’s agreement about not doing big offer sheets was officially ended today by the Flyers who are forcing the Ducks to pay Leo Carlsson $18M/year (highest paid player in the league once he signs). They know the Ducks have to match it but they’re presumably doing it to screw them over because of some past dealings.

And now Bedard will be expecting at least that much, not to mention that some team could very well do the same kind of offer for him. You can offer up to $20.5M just to fuck the Blackhawks should you so choose. Very good chance that they will need to make Connor Bedard the highest paid player in NHL history and potentially in a season where he’s injured for much of it.

Another freakish injury to the same shoulder, I feel like now they’re going to decide it needs surgery to prevent it from continuing to happen and he’ll miss half (if not more) of the season.

Signed a couple guys I wanted the Hawks to go after, but the dollars/years they signed them for are pretty wild. And then took on Darnell Nurse’s entire contract.

I also think the Blackhawks need a year of showing real tangible growth before any good players are going to be eager to sign here. Lot of pressure on young guys to step up this season, can’t have another year at the bottom of the standings at this point.

The whole “we want this to be Bedard’s team” should go out the window imo. He needs help. It’s too much for him to have to be the only one driving everything with so much pressure imo

Davidson sounded like a guy who was done making moves. I guess we’re looking at something like this, will still be projected as a bottom 3 or 4 team in the league but hopefully a bunch of guys can take a leap. I definitely hoped for a bit more this offseason,

Cole is a solid third pairing dman and Smith is a solid 4th liner.

But not much more from either

He will never be worth the value but hopefully he at least provides some solid play

Maybe he levels up who knows. Give me double digit goals and 60+ points and I’ll be happy.
