The Cowdray pearls originally belonged to Viscountess (Lady) Cowdray, a noted philanthropist and benefactor of nurses in the UK. I have never seen any information about how she acquired this strand of famous black pearls.
The last Sotheby's site shows the range of overtones in this set of pearls. The laboratory reports also show that these pearls are of relatively modest size for Tahitian pearls.
Photos of Lady Cowdray are rare in the public arena; however, I think that she may be wearing her famous pearls in the photo below.
