Munn's description of the tiara as "a circlet in eighteenth-century French taste" left me baffled, as I can't see anything even remotely reminiscent of that!

In contrary, in my perception the tiara is a surprisingly late example of these eclectic late-nineteenth-century jewels which are not only somewhat out of proportion but also decidedly undecisive in style.

It's this lack of a distinctive style in combination with a misguided longing for grandeur which makes it in retrospect so utterly understandable that after 1900 jewellers and artists were working so hard to overcome this period's lapses of taste. And frankly, I'd never linked such an inferior design as late as 1913 to Cartier!
