Queen Alexandra. Tiara to identify??
Posted by Beth on November 18, 2018, 7:15 am
I stumbled on this portrait of Queen Alexandra in a newspaper in 1909.
The tiara caught my eye, as it is unknown to me. As the accompanying information in the newspaper said that the artist had painted it without a sitting from the Queen the tiara may be the result of artistic licence; however, all the other jewels bear some semblance to known jewels.
Detail of the tiara.
which suggests that it has cabochon emeralds. Because I have found some references to Queen Alexandra wearing an emerald tiara, I have not dismissed this as a figment of the imagination but, at the same time, I realise that we would need much more information before it could be argued that the Queen had a tiara like this.
Has anyone ever found any additional information about this portrait? Or a colour photo? Various newspapers said that the painting was for the Naval and Military Club, and that the artist had submitted it to Queen Alexandra for appraisal.
Interesting find Beth, thank you for the article. Could this be the tiara maybe mentioned in the Daily Mail which was reported that Meghan saw at BP for her bridal wear selection?
Regards,
Dave.

I think Mr. Marchetti was simply copying from Luke Fildes's well-known coronation portrait of Queen Alexandra, hence the semblance to known jewels. Whether he took his inspiration for the tiara from another painting or photo we don't know, but I'd assume he simply wanted to add some personal touches to his work, hence the different type of column, the less elaborate curtain, the unknown tiara.
Even though I have references to Queen Alexandra wearing an emerald tiara, I agree that the most likely scenario regarding the 1909 portrait is what Mauriz said: that Marchetti based his work on Fildes' painting, substituting another tiara for the Diamond Diadem.
Maybe, one day will see photos of QA wearing an emerald tiara.
