QEII. Queen Mary's diamond stomacher Posted by Beth on November 18, 2019, 5:04 pm Queen Mary's diamond stomacher is rarely worn by QEII, although during the Commonwealth tour of 1953-4 it was seen on a number of evening occasions; however, unlike 2002 when QEII wore the entire jewel, in the early years she seems to have used only the lower section. 2002 Can we add any more occasions when HM wore the lower part of the stomacher? In the attached photo she is seen reviewing the St. John Ambulance Brigade in Hyde Park in 1956: She also wore the jewel as a brooch at the Gala Performance hosted in her honour during her first State Visit to Norway back in 1955. The lower part of the stomacher looks wonderful in the formal portrait. I don't think I had ever noticed it before. And it is interesting to see that HM used the brooch on less formal occasions. Thanks Kongetro! When I hunted through images I have, I noticed that HM wore it when visiting north America in 1959. I wonder if Queen Mary ever wore the jewel as separate brooches? Has anyone ever noticed that? Has anyone got an image of HM wearing the brooch in Norway?

I noticed that QEII was also wearing the twin bracelets given to Queen Mary as a wedding gift by the Bombay presidency. I don't think they have been seen worn by anyone in many years. Or am I mistaken?

Queen Mary's diamond stomacher" June 26, 1959 The Queen was actually on tour of Canada and opened the St. Lawrence Seaway (which connects the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean) with the US President from Saint-Lambert Quebec from which they took a short tour on HMY Britannia. It is too bad that all the pictures from this even are not very good. HM wore a robin egg blue ensemble and the brooch "popped" more that it shows. Here is a short video of the opening followed by grand jewels for a banquet followed by, what looks to be, a bit of awkward dancing.

I will have an enjoyable time watching the video later. The information attached to the Getty image did say HM was in Canada, but the inclusion of the US President confused me and so to be safe I referred to a "north American" visit. Apologies to all Canadians for my boo-boo. It is good to know the context now that Bryce has outlined it for us.

The video shows clearly that QEII was the host welcoming the US President. The dancing is beyond awkward! Can anyone hazard a guess at what brooch QEII wore to pin her sash to the back of her gown?

It is reported that she is the grandest queen in history where jewels are concerned and may have been responsible for most of the British royal family's jewel collection being the way it is today.
