Queen Wilhelmina's wedding day Posted by Janet on February 12, 2020, 8:38 am See link here to a picture of Queen Wilhelmina's wedding day, if you click on the picture you get a very HQ picture. A couple of questions: What tiara is Queen Wilhelmina wearing? What necklace is Queen Wilhelmina wearing? I cannot recall any of the recent/current Dutch royal woman wearing such a necklace. I assume Queen Emma is wearing the Dutch rivere necklace which is now worn as a tiara? Who is the lady to the left of Queen Wilhelmina - I presume it Prince Henry's mother (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Marie_of_Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt)? Frustratingly she appears to be wearing very, very grand jewels but they are blurred. Does anyone know of a better picture? I hope that some who know more about the Dutch royal jewels will be able to help. I would be tempted to say that it might be the Stuart tiara, but I cannot see the really large diamonds! Was that tiara ever worn without the large diamonds before Queen Maxima's time?

Augusta Reuss of Köstritz's daughter-in-law, Grand Duchess Anastasia Mikhailovna of Russia, the mother of the young Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin seated next to Queen Emma, was also portrayed wearing the tiara. A website named Unofficial Royalty states that Wilhelmina was wearing the smaller version of the Stuart Tiara which – as Beth has already suggested – seems most likely.

The diamond tiara may be worn in two different ways. Queen Wilhelmina wore the "high" version for her inauguration, the"low" version for her wedding a few years later. The tiara and the large items are not in the family anymore, probably lost in war and stolen.

Some of the dresses Posted by Beth on February 14, 2020, 8:58 am, in reply to "Re: Queen Wilhelmina's wedding day" I am not sure if a description and some sketches of some of the ladies' gowns will help with identification of the various ladies. Even if they don't, I think some might like to see them. The written description also provides some more names of females attending the ceremony. Perhaps those names will give others some clues about the identity of the jewels.

In the press cutting I posted above it noted that the Baroness' dress had guipure lace, which I think might describe the lace on the lady's dress. I very much doubt if the lady wearing the larger tiara (and seated between the two men) is the Grand Duchess Vladimir. According to a number of reports, although the Grand Duchess had planned to attend the wedding, she was unable to do so as she had some sort of operation. The dress she had made for the wedding. According to another news report, the "indisposition" was an operation. Despite the above reports, the Daily Telegraph 9 February 1901 reported that the Grand Duchess was present. I suspect that this report was pre-prepared and published without checking all the facts.

Duke and Duchess Paul Friedrich of Mecklenburg-Schwerin Posted by mauriz on February 16, 2020, 5:42 pm, in reply to "Yes...Grand Duchess Vladimir?" The man seated to Queen Emma's right might be Duke Paul Friedrich of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, who was after the death of Friedrich Franz III. the eldest surviving half-brother of the groom, brother of Grand Duchess Vladimir, and uncle of the young Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin who is seated to Queen Emma's left. If so, the lady to his right with the impressive tiara should be his wife Duchess Marie, née Princess Windisch-Graetz.

Re: Duke and Duchess Paul Friedrich of Mecklenburg-Schwerin Posted by mauriz on February 17, 2020, 6:06 pm, in reply to "Re: Duke and Duchess Paul Friedrich of Mecklenburg-Schwerin" He certainly looks like Duke Paul Friedrich, but the lady to his right seems to be wearing a high-necked dress with ruffles and a veil, which doesn't resemble at all the sketch of Duchess Paul's "toilette in gaze d'argent" in your newspaper clipping. I found an engraving after a painting of Johan Mari Henri ten Kate online. It was probably painted after the photo Janet posted about, but has a slightly different perspective and the lady in question is not partially covered by the gentleman to her right. This was probably an intervention by the painter and her appearance might not be realistic at all, but she seems to be rather short and since Queen Emma's lace veil was said to represent a widow's cap maybe the same was true for this lady. From her appearance in the engraving I was wondering if she might be Queen Emma's sister Pauline, Princess Bentheim-Steinfurt, but Pauline wasn't widowed at that time and neither of the gentlemen next to her looks remotely like the Prince of Bentheim-Steinfurt.

I have to confess that I am hopeless at recognising any of the numerous German or Dutch royals at the wedding. Queen Wilhelmina's procession I also found this written description of the dress worn by Duchess Paul of Mecklenburg Scherwin. (the evidence that this is Duchess Paul was on the previous page) From the various photos I have seen, I believe that our mystery lady is wearing feathers with her tiara. Does that signify that she was one of either Queen Wilhelmina's or Queen Emma's Ladies? Some of the ladies with feathers (in the wedding photos) seem to match those in a painting of Queen Wilhelmina's Inaugration in 1898. After I re-read the list of who was in Queen Wilhelmina's procession, I wondered if Princess Charlotte of Prussia might be the lady in question. I suspect that her daughter, Feodora, may not have been present because of her periodic health problems. When I saw this photo of Princess Charlotte, I wondered if this is the tiara which can be seen at Queen Wilhelmina's wedding??

The list of guests in Queen Wilhelmina's procession in the newspaper clipping does indeed include a Princess Charlotte, but I think this is Duke Wilhelm of Mecklenburg-Schwerin's and Princess Alexandrine of Prussia's daughter Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg (1868–1944), who was married to Prince Heinrich (Henry) XVIII Reuss of Köstritz. But maybe I missed that Charlotte of Prussia was also listed among the wedding guests somewhere? I feel that the only way to identify people was, if we had a comprehensive list of wedding guests and a clue about the seating arrangements (according to rank and/or family ties?). Who for instance is the gentleman next to the mother of the groom? Prince Albert (Albrecht) of Prussia, son of Princess Marianne of the Netherlands?
