Queen Alexandra wearing the turquoise and diamond tiara ? Posted by Franck on April 19, 2020, 6:18 am Just found Queen Alexandra wearing an an unknown tiara. I think it the turquoise and diamond tiara : (From Dnaroyals) 22 July 1896, private chapel at Buckingham Palace, wedding of Prince Karl of Denmark (later King Haakon VII of Norway) and Princess Maud of Wales. Queen Victoria [1] (bride’s grandmother), The Princess of Wales [2] (later Queen Alexandra, bride’s mother and groom’s aunt), the Duke and Duchess of York [3] (later King George V, bride’s brother, and Queen Mary), and the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Denmark [4] (later King Frederik VIII and Queen Louise of Denmark, groom’s parents and bride’s uncle and aunt) What do you think ? It is the tiara Queen Alexandra received as part of her wedding gifts from Edward VII. I think that it is easy to become confused when looking at the photo Franck posted because it is not as clear as some others. Below are slightly sharper images from the Royal Collection where it is easier to see the upright elements belong to the wedding gift tiara. Detail I suspect that the photo below was taken on the same day, but I haven't checked.

It confirms also that the lady sat behind Queen Victoria is not the future Queen Mary, she is sat elsewhere, although it makes me wonder who is this lady then? Also who is the lady who is sat in the front row in front of Queen Mary's mother the Duchess of Teck, she appears to be wearing a substantial coronet. Princess Louise perhaps? I can see Princess Helena sitting around two places away from her, so Princess Louise seems logical but this lady looks older and more slight than Princess Louise. The Crown Princess of Denmark looks like she has her face in her hands.

" She is wearing black (which strikes me as very odd for the wedding of her sister-in-law, Queen Victoria is an understandable exception), she is much more voluptuous than Queen Mary was at that time and the jewellery also doesn't fit with the jewels which the future Queen Mary had at her disposal in 1896 - to be blunt they are a bit underwhelming and even by 1896 as this photo shows the future Queen/Empress had adopted the approach of more is always better - the link leads to a picture of the then Duchess in 1896. https://www.bibelotslondon.com/queen-mary-in-jewels-signed-autograph-photo-1896-by-j-thomson-4015-p.asp What do others think?

The lady marked number 3 is definitely not Queen Mary. At the wedding Queen Mary was at the side of the chapel near a wall. Her mother, the Duchess of Teck can be seen near her. The chapel photo Detail showing Queen Mary who was wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara on the coronet frame and with the upright pearls. During this era Queen Mary always wore the tiara on its coronet frame so it formed a circle -- that seems to have been the fashion then.

Other royal ladies present Posted by Beth on April 19, 2020, 6:00 pm, in reply to "Here is Queen Mary from the chapel wedding photo" Janet, I have thought for a long time that the lady who is partially obscured by the pillar is Princess Helen, Princess Christian. I think (but am not 100% sure) that the lady seen at the far right hand edge of the detail below is Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyle -- but I admit I could be very wrong. I have also thought that the lady in front of Queen Mary is the Duchess of Albany, possibly wearing the Indian tiara which had been given to Queen Victoria. To me the real mystery is -- who is the lady sitting almost directly behind Queen Alexandra?

I know they attended the Wedding of Princess Louise to the Duke of fife and this time both the bride and groom where their grandchildren. It was quite a surprise to me that it was not someone from a Royal House - I had thought of the Crown Princess of Greece. But now, thanks to you Beth, there is no doubt who she is - or any of the others in the painting / photo either So are we also then able to identify positively the jewels (mainly the tiaras, as those are the pieces showing most prominently) worn for the wedding?
