1970 State Opening of Parliament (Please identify lady wearing massive necklace standing behind PA) Posted by Dave on May 17, 2020, 5:27 am Hi guys hope everyone is doing fine. At (4:57/8) minutes into the below clip, one can see a lady in waiting standing behind Princess Ann and Lord Mountbatten wearing an extremely large necklace maybe out of diamonds or pearls. I wonder could that be the Duchess of Buccleuch's great belt buckle/ tiara only spoke of some weeks ago? Regards, Dave.

1970 State Opening of Parliament (Tiaras to Identify) Posted by Dave on May 17, 2020, 5:45 am, in reply to "1970 State Opening of Parliament (Please identify lady wearing massive necklace standing behind PA)" At (2:32) minutes one can see a healthy set of many tiaras and also at (3:07) minutes what stood out is a lady in a blue strapped dress with grand necklace and earrings and a lady at the top row in black with a kokoshnik shaped tiara. They are other outstanding ones I have noted as well too but am unable to get the stills/ pictures enlarged. Then if one goes back to the ladies in waiting you would also see that they are also outstandingly jewelled up. Could someone get the stills/ pictures enlarged? Regards, Dave. I know so little about the many tiaras owned by noble families who attended openings of parliament over the years. I know that others will know more than I do. Perhaps a still image might trigger some recollections for others. Apologies that the image is very blurry. It was the best I could do. Can anyone give a better image?

Duchess of Buccleuch Posted by Janet on May 18, 2020, 3:54 am, in reply to "Re: 1970 State Opening of Parliament (Tiaras to Identify)" The Duchess of Buccleuch in 1970 was Molly Lascelles, born in 1900 so I think we can safely say the brunette wearing the Russian style tiara is not her. Could it be her daughter-in-law Jane, who was brunette and a great beauty and could possibly be this lady wearing a large Russian style kokoshink? It cannot be any other Duchess as she is sat quite far back, Duchesses tended to sit right behind the royal ladies on the second row. Jane's husband wasn't Duke at that time so wasn't entitled to sit in the House of Lords I believe until his father died, could she have accompanied her father-in-law perhaps? Some elaborate beading perhaps? The Mistress of the Robes (The Countess of Euston, as she was until November that year when her husband succeeded as Duke of Grafton) The lady on the left, the Countess of Leicester CVO, Lady of the bedchamber, had a glittery gold edging on her dress. There is a lovely colour gif of the snippet of footage you mentioned at... HRH The Princess Anne and Ladies in waiting A few questions from me: who is the lady that sits next to HRH Princess Alexandra and HRH The Princess Margaret? I wondered if Alice of Athlone, but no broad riband of the GCVO, just some left shoulder orders and medals. Could it be the Duchess of Beaufort (Princess Mary of Teck/Lady Mary Cambridge?) She had a CStJ, and would have received GRV's silver jubilee medal and GRVI and ERII's coronation medals. Any one else have any thoughts? Also surprised that there are four ladies in waiting. On the left, behind Princess Anne, the Countess of Leicester is wearing her badge of office as Mistress of the Robes Lady of the bedchamber and a CVO (see her in the same tiara at... Countess of Leicester, made a CVO on 1/1/1965, to her right the lady in waiting is wearing her badge as a lady of the bedchamber, to her left (the lady you are asking about is wearing just a CVO, and the final lady, in the buttercup dress is wearing no order or badge. The lady in question is the Hon. Mary Anne Morrison, who was appointed as a Lady of the Bed Chamber to QEII in 1960. This link to an Amazon photo site shows clearly that it is a dress feature. I have no idea whether it was a family item or a borrowed item, but it is an attractive tiara, as the link above shows. The lady in the centre of the three ladies standing together on the right hand side is, I believe, Esme, Lady Cromer, who was also a Lady of the Bed Chamber. Lady Cromer I haven't be able to find other images of her wearing the tiara but, both her family and her husband's were extremely wealthy. Sadly for us, the ladies seem to have avoided the press when dressed in their grand jewels. I suspect that the fourth lady on the right (standing one step lower than the other ladies) is Rowena Brassey, Lady-in-Waiting to Princess Anne, but I have no information on her tiara. I am with DavoSt on his opinion of who the lady preceding Princess Alexandra is -- I think it has to be the Duchess of Beaufort. I don't think it is Princess Alice. Unfortunately, although I (perhaps like everyone else) tried to stop the video to get a closer view, I was unsuccessful. Nevertheless, I wonder, if it is the Duchess of Beaufort, whether she was wearing this tiara, which was given to her at the time of her marriage by farmers associated with the famous Beaufort Hunt? What has come out is the British nobility/ aristocracy are well equipped even if their not now, in a 1970's Britain from what I can see, they are very much well off in the jewel stakes. Oh how I do wish we can get some more enlarged stills where we can delve into the head pieces seen. Is it possible that the ladies in waiting are loaned pieces from the royal vaults? Numerous Pinterest sites have the following photograph of the tiara, which is attributed to Chaumet circa 1885, The Countess' necklace is perhaps best viewed in the wedding photos of her daughter, Lady Anne Coke, Lady Glenconner.
