Lady Leicester's Tiara and Necklace were recently discussed on here but I have an intriguing observation about Lady Glenconner's Tiara which I believe is the Abergavenny Tiara worn by the Marchioness of Abergavenny, another one of the Queen's Ladies-in-Waiting!

The tiara worn by Lady Anne Coke, Lady Glenconner is, I suspect, likely to be a Tennant/Glenconner jewel. The family was very wealthy and is likely to have had more than one tiara, but photos of the ladies of the family in grand jewels do not feature much in the press. Lady Anne, as Lady Anne Tennant, was photographed wearing it at a ball in the 1960s. The link 992234177 gave to what is described on Pinterest as the Tennant family tiara shows a tiara with large diamond stars. Lady Anne wore 2 of the stars as brooches for one function. I have looked in the press but could not locate any photos of the Marchionesses of Abergavenny wearing grand jewels -- so no tiaras. Similarly, I couldn't find images of the wife of the heir wearing a tiara. The photo agencies don't have many images of the ladies of this family either. The only image featuring a tiara I found was one on the Topfoto site where the lady behind QEII is identified as the Marchioness. If this is the Marchioness of Abergavenny, she is wearing a different tiara. (I haven't checked to see who accompanied HM to Jamaica in March 1966). I wonder if Lady Abergavenny, like the Duchess of Grafton, might have borrowed a tiara? Of course, there might be several similar looking tiaras owned by various families.

The images I found of the alleged Marchioness of Abergavenny's Tiara were from cursory google searches, which I thought might be an interesting lead on Lady Anne's Tiara! In fact, I came across them after finding out the Marchioness had been given an Austrian Order during the Queen's State Visit to Austria in 1969, and tried to find her Tiara (I was not entirely successful)! I do have some more pictures of the Tennant/Glenconner Tiara, which was worn by Lady Glenconner for a picture in the 1980s, which I shared a few months ago on here! I also found an image of her wearing three of the stars as brooches like the image you shared! I'm now quite intrigued by Lady Glenconner's earrings, which she has worn for almost all of her evening events for decades! I wonder if they were gifts from her parents or her in-laws? and if they have a family provenance?

Currently, Photobucket is again giving me the extra special, deluxe non-service experience, so I am unable to upload the images to prove this. I will do so as soon as I can. The still posted by The Royal Watcher above comes from a video of the Opening of Parliament in 1960. (see video below) According to the Court Circular, the Ladies were the Duchess of Devonshire, the Countess of Euston (later Duchess of Grafton) and Lady Rose Baring. Opening of Parliament 1960 The tiara appears to be part of the jewels of the Countesses of Antrim. It was worn by the Countess of Antrim for the 1911 Coronation. Louisa (Jane) Countess of Antrim wearing the tiara at the 1911 Coronation. Lady Rose Baring was the daughter of the 7th Earl of Antrim and sister of the 8th Earl, so my assumption is that she borrowed the tiara from her family.

I think that this is an entirely different tiara -- but perhaps it is just the lack of definition which makes it appear so. I also noticed that the lady is not a peeress; she is wearing Court feathers, not a coronet.

Now that you have explained who the lady is, I am sure that she would have had her own tiara to wear. I did a hunt on the UK press today but, sadly, I didn't find any photos of her wearing grand jewels; however, I only got time to check one database. The other problem is that there are numerous "Hon Mrs Bowes Lyon". The tiara is not listed in any of the published lists of her wedding gifts. I have a couple of photos of the Marchioness of Abergavenny at State occasions when she was in attendance on QEII, but frustratingly Photobucket is being disobliging again. Hopefully tomorrow morning the painfully frustrating service will work again and I can post images.

While Rachel was from a very wealthy family, it is important to note that the Countess of Strathmore and Lady Elphinstone, the Queen's mother and sister both borrowed tiaras from the Queen, so it is not inconceivable that Rachel would have also borrowed one, albeit it is not one associated with the Royal Family! Thought I should just highlight this. I tried to google Rachel's mother and daughter (who became the Countess of Stair) to see if either of them wore this tiara but couldn't find anything. I must say I find it pretty remarkable that the Countess of Strathmore did not have a tiara of her own to wear at her daughter's coronation. While by 1937 the British aristocracy was in a very awkward position, the war tipped it over the edge, I still find it odd that someone like the Countess of Strathmore, wife of one of Scotland's wealthiest landowners wouldn't have had a diadem of her own.

Since Nina Cavendish-Bentick (as the countess was before marriage) wasn't from a wealthy family herself (albeit descended from Dukes of Portland and Devonshire) I don't believe she contributed much to the jewels of her husband's family. While some aristrocratic families did have multiple tiaras we have also seen that many Dukedoms often only had a couple of tiaras at most. By all accounts the Earl & Countess of Strathmore were rather unpretencious people who lived a quiet life so they may have not felt the need to add to their jewel collection. Mostly the Countess was seen in a long rope of pearls that she also wore at the coronation. Only when their daughter married into royalty they purchased some grand jewels for her.

Most of their land was in the north that agriculturally was not the best. They seemed to go from owning a huge amount of land to very little very quickly. Perhaps they took mortgages out in the years prior to the huge American wheat imports, perhaps their coal was of lower quality. They lost a lot when John Bowes inherited his fortune and founded his museum. The family sold Streatlam Castle at about the time that Elizabeth married York, which suggests there was a need. They were not after listed with the great wealthy families like Dudley, Derby, Londonderry, Westminster, Cadogan, Northumberland, Lonsdale, Fitzwilliam or Durham

It seems to me that, in the upper portion of the jewel worn by the Countess, the individual elements have a more elliptical shape than the crescents in the Teck tiara, and that those elements do not have an open section on one side. Other differences are - 1. In the tiara worn by the Countess there are small upright elements separating the elliptical elements. 2. There is no sign of the three rose elements so prominent in the Teck crescent tiara in the jewel worn by the Countess of Strathmore.

I am also concerned by the terrible quality of the photo, which can make a huge difference as do the angles/light which can play tricks as we have all seen flummox us so much in trying to identify pieces from grey old pictures. Case in point, the Duchess of Fife. Wearing her Fife tiara because of the quality of the picture (maybe she was moving her head when it was taken), the tiara is blurred and looks unrecognisable. I am surprised that a good quality group photo of the Queen with her parents was not taken on Coronation Day.
