More on the Cholmondeley floral tiara Posted by Beth on August 4, 2020, 5:10 pm I am previously on record as saying that I do not think the floral tiara worn by the current Marchioness of Cholmondeley is a reworked version of the Ancaster Heathcote floral tiara. See https://mb.boardhost.com/historyroyaljewels/thread/1542947070.html Apart from the two press reports I posted in 2018, I have now found a description of the tiara in 1911. According to the press report, the Cholmondeley tiara was amongst those exhibited in the Cartier exhibition of tiaras to be worn at the 1911 Coronation. I think that the description of the tiara in the 1911 exhibition matches the floral tiara worn by the current Marchioness. Newspaper description from The Australasian 20 May 1911. To my way of thinking the description rules out the Ancaster Heatcote tiara being the Cholmondeley tiara. Cholmondeley tiara Ancaster Heatcote tiara Compared to the Ancaster Heatcote tiara, the Harewood floral tiara is a relatively restrained item. Closer view The last image helps explain (in my opinion) why the Cholmondeley floral tiara is not a re-worked or re-configured version of the Ancaster Heatcote tiara, as in 1911 the rose in Cholmondeley was described as not as standing out so markedly. In the Ancaster Heatcote tiara, the roses, and in particular the central rose, are very prominent.

Like so many tiaras of the same era, the Harewood tiara appears to be very versatile. I wonder if the family has retained this tiara? So many other jewels have been sold at various times.

I also didn't think that Cholmondeley Floral Tiara is a reworked version of the Ancaster Heathcote Tiara! I'm really curious about what the Cholmondeleys still own, especially as they sold the Sapphire and Emerald Tiaras quite a few years ago! In my files, I have a (not so clear) picture of the Harewood Floral Tiara, which gives a slightly better look at the elements! I wonder if they still own it, probably not as it seems Queen Victoria's Sapphire Coronet was their last remaining tiara!

It raises all sorts of issues. 1. Do you know when and why the tiara was displayed? 2. Why do you think that Queen Victoria's sapphire tiara was the last one owned by the family? But my biggest query is -- Do others think that the tiara (as per The Royal Watcher's image) and the spray brooch worn by Marion Stein, Countess of Harewood are the same jewel? I don't think so. Re: More on the Harewood Floral Tiara Posted by The Royal Watcher on August 6, 2020, 7:13 am, in reply to "Re: More on the Harewood Floral Tiara" 1) Sadly I have no idea, I found the image on Pinterest a couple of years ago, and it does not have an electronic trail. 2) I can't find the source where I read it, but I recall reading an anecdote by Geoffrey Munn a few years ago: Munn contacted the Earl and Countess of Harewood for an exhibition, asking it they have any Tiaras, and the Countess said there was only one (the Sapphire Coronet) but it was so small Munn probably didn't want it for the exhibition. (UPDATE- I read this anecdote on the Order of Splendor site and also wrote about in my own article on the Tiara) I don't think the Tiara and the spray brooch are the same jewel. It looks quite similar in style (but not the same piece) to the necklace/bandeau from the Ranee of Gondal discussed a few weeks ago, and I would imagine the Harewoods must have had quite a decent jewellery collection before Princess Mary's marriage!

Munn sent a letter to to the Earl of Harewood and the Countess telephoned him saying that “there is only one tiara”. But Munn’s enquiry was about “anything of royal provenance”, so it’s possible there were still other tiaras in the family.
